LANA DEL REY - Norman F***ing Rockwell - Full Album Reaction Part 2

I am SO glad I waited to listen to this again until after the previous albums! This was a completely different experience! Hope you guys enjoy the deep dive. It's another long one of ramblings! š¦š©µ
I definitely think the āblack narcissistā line can be interpreted as shadow self as you say, but I actually think this part is about her mother. Canāt say too much about this right now as more will be revealed on your Lana albums journey, but itās common knowledge in Lana lore that she has a very strained relationship with her mum, they are estranged, and there was lots of emotional abuse there - much of which hints to narcissistic abuse. In the previous verse of Hope before this āblack narcissistā bit sheās talked about wanting to call her dad and say hi - she actually clarified in an instagram live that this āhi dadā line was literally speaking to her dad asking him to call her because she missed him. She was actually estranged from her dad for a while too just before she got famous but she has a very deep loving close relationship with him now and he is always with her on tour etc. But she doesnāt have a relationship with her mum at all. So to me it makes total sense that she would be talking about her mum here given she was just talking about her dad. āShe couldnāt care less and Iāve never cared more so thereās no more to say about that. Except hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have. Hope is a dangerous thing for a woman with my pastā.
Lana has talked about that āblack narcissistā line specifically because she was upset that it had been suggested it was about race (long story) and she stated that it had nothing to with that and that the line was about something incredibly personal and painful to her.
I also think the āborn of confusion and quiet collusionā line is a reference to abuse in the home too.
Again, multiple interpretations are possible as with all Lana, but it definitely makes sense.

Yes, YES ! Blue Banisters is my favorite among Lana's albums (I love them all but omg this one...). Cannot wait for the time to be obsessed with it lol. It has a special meaning because I've stopped listening to Lana Del Rey several years after Honeymoon and I re-discovered her when BB dropped. I don't know how many times I played this whole record, but a lot!

Thank you for the beautiful comment that made me smile on a day I havenāt been too smily! And honestly, youāre always welcome to write an essay on here! Lol. I think some of the darker stuff )like the line about the serial killer) may be difficult to understand if you arenāt someone who has felt that darkness before. Unfortunately, I understand what she means here and itās such a poetic way to express that moment of true hopelessness. Anyways, I promise the reaction will be kind to that version of me! I still love her, but I will have fun comparing where I am today in my Lana journey to the place I was 4 months ago. Anyways, have a wonderful day!! ā¤ļø

I finally got to watch the whole video, so first of all, congratulations for such a great, full circle project! I really enjoyed your takes as always. I felt motivated to write an essay about your response to each song, but then realised that nobody needs that, so I'll just make one comment. Don't be hard on yourself when you re-watch your original reaction. Even though it was obvious that you missed a lot of the references, and weren't aware of how Lana's writing works, that video was the one that made me want to stick around, and eventually sign up here. The thing that stood out then, and still stands out, is the respect you pay to Lana's artistic 'brain'.
I feel like people who do first time reactions to her on Youtube and elsewhere, many of which are also great, often don't seem to realise that she's an adult woman writing about difficult subjects. You wouldn't believe the number of people who have responded to the 'serial killer' line in Happiness Is A Butterfly with feeling they need to warn Lana how bad dating a murderer would be! As if she needs to be told that, and also as if that's the meaning of the line. You always try to read things from her POV.
I'm very excited to see you react to her MVs from this album, as well as live performances, especially a couple of 'Hope' performances.

You should google. āLana Dey Rey, question for the cultureā
This is a post she made and she got destroyed online by people/media.
I believe that the āculture is litā is in reference to this event. And it pretty much made her want to quit music.
Whether or not she was right. It was def how she was feeling at that moment.

That is amazing!! Iām so excited to rematch that with you all. Itās gonna be strange but healing I suspect for me. I was only about 3 months post break-up from a relationship I thought was āitā for me and so I really feel like Iām so different. I think itāll be nice to see that girl react to it. Itāll be fun I think! Have a great day a work, my friend! ā¤ļø

Loving this and all your side quests! Got to you dropping in a beautiful The Blackest Day rendition āØš„ work calls so can't wait to watch the rest later!
(I actually haven't watched your og NFR reaction. I came in during your BTD era and then learning how you decided to go back through all her albums, I purposely postponed watching it until you made it back here for your re-fathomings - which are ICONIC as always! And once you decided to react to your reaction, well I'm just gonna wait to watch it for the first time with you šš)

I agree with your interpretation of āIām your manā, but I think it means more than one thing, and in addition to your interpretation Iāve always thought that it is also gendered. In this song, sheās taking the stereotypical role a man ātraditionallyā viewed as taking in a relationship - the strong, supportive rock who will catch you when you fall. Sheās saying thatās bullshit and flipping that stereotype on its head. She mentioned in an interview that this song came out of her partner telling her the reason they were so well matched is because they are both sad and damaged, and that it was a comment that upset her because she actually wasnāt in a bad place at that time. So I think this song is her way of saying āyou donāt see that Iām actually strong and I can be the one that takes care of youā. Hence the lines āyou took my sadness out of contextā , āthey mistook my kindness for weaknessā and also āIām your manā. So as I said I completely agree and think your interpretation is true as well but I think it has a double meaning (we know Lana loves her multiple meanings!)
