Tons of errata in the scale names
Added 2020-05-18 07:21:44 +0000 UTCYo! I've been busy-busy tackling a difficult set of corrections in the set of scale names. As you might know, the scale name collection is a motley and messy aggregate from a bunch of publicly-available scale lists, and (not surprisingly) they are full of problems. Recently I received a lot of guidance from an expert in Carnatic Ragas, George Howlett from London, UK. See his website here: https://ragajunglism.org/
There is still a giant mess in there under the broad category "Carnatic" that I need to sort through, but at least now I've incorporated the properly-spelled and corrected ones from Mr Howlett, and eventually I'll verify and/or expunge the others.
As part of this effort I needed a better method of keeping all the names organized, so at last I've imported everything into a SQL database, and wrote some scripts to export the names in a variety of ways needed to share one single authority source. I'll be able to use this one database for the website, to render scale details for the book, and to re-render the youtube videos that are affected by the name changes.
You might also be interested that I separated some of the Carnatic names out into a new tradition: the numbered melakarta. See them here:

I will need to re-render a lot of the youtube videos, and that is kind of disappointing. It's a massive effort to do that, because any change to a scale name changes not only that one video, but all the other videos in which that one is mentioned... including all its modes, and its inverse. And this round of corrections has already affected the names of over 72 scales.
The good news amid this is with the creation of those new videos, I'll be able to include all my *current* patrons in the credits at the end!
OK it's really too late to be awake, I'm calling it a night
Cheers
Ian
