Mini update

Firstly, thanks to the new patrons who have joined this crew! My gratitude is profound, because tada! the patronage from everyone combined is enough to offset the monthly server hosting costs. Not counting whatever might happen when I claim it in taxes, but I’m not going to fuss about that. It’s just humbling to see that so many people are willing to chip in a buck or two to keep the machines running. Of course I would love to attract more patronage to cover extra stuff like vintage theory books (that are often so ungodly expensive) and maybe hiring an animator to help with making more video content.

I haven’t done much on the music theory front in the past week, apart from fixing an error in the Scale essay that was reported by an intrepid and astute reader. Actually more than just intrepid: the error was noticed by someone who was citing my work for their Masters thesis. Oops! Now the list of proper scales doesn’t have a bunch of duplicates. It is possible that recent changes to the underlying software might have caused other problems; I’ll need to spend some time proofreading.

The reason I didn’t put much into the Exciting Universe project this week is that I wanted to step away a little and put some effort into composition. I have two big things on the go, one is a suite of new pieces for cello+piano duet called Belfire Ennead, and the other is a full orchestral arrangement of an older work, Opus Arcana. Both are going to take years to complete because alas, music is something I can only do in stolen moments between other life-as-an-adult things.

I hope you are all doing well and staying disinfected and being a force for justice and kindness in the world. Weird times we live in, huh.

Regards,

Ian

FWIW, this isn't by any stretch a full time venture, it's a hobby that I get to fiddle with once in a while, and I'm grateful for the support of my patrons to keep it going and shared publicly with the world.

Hi Kentin! Active in the sense that occasionally I have time to fuss over music theory stuff, and I usually have a few projects in progress. I recently did some work to fix errors in a bunch of videos, and updated some scale names on the website. Most of my work lately is devoted to working on "the book", a giant tome about the arcane properties of musical scales. I have no idea how long that will take to finish... it's about half done now and it's slow going. The main pitch for patreon patrons is that this financial support helps me offset the cost of my web hosting for all those scale detail pages.
