Jester Mindset ft. Milo Edwards

Milo returns to the poster's dome to talk about how and why comedians have become influencers and what this suggests about how we think about comedy and making jokes. We talk about how internet culture has changed comedy, and the way that comedians develop routines and profiles - being far more aware of online discourse, than the audience they're actually playing to - creating a situation where to be a very successful comedian, you don't really have to be funny. You just need a bit of charisma when you're doing a mad rant. Healthy!

I do think it is worth noting that depending on what poll you look at, at least 63% of Americans support single-payer healthcare, and only 6% want full privatization. I had to cringe when I heard "very proudly doesn't have a national healthcare system."

To be clear: I don’t actually care about Joe Rogan, per se. He’s more of a symptom of institutional rot than anything else.

With regard to Joe Rogan: Joe Rogan effectively cannot be censored, since Spotify gave him $200 million to move to their network. If Spotify “fires” Joe Rogan, they’re still out $200 million, and he still has a $200 million parachute to move his brand elsewhere. Telling Spotify to “fire” Joe Rogan mainly consists of telling Spotify to burn their $200 million investment. If anything, Joe Rogan’s viewership has already suffered from being on Spotify, so this is really just Spotify wanting to have their cake and eat it, too, with little to no effect on Joe Rogan himself. Spotify made an extremely risky investment, and now they’re trying to keep it from blowing up in their face, when this outcome was entirely foreseeable from the outset. The “bad guy” here isn’t Joe Rogan. The “bad guy” here is Spotify being greedy. Which, like… this is Spotify we’re talking about, one of the most exploitative companies on earth.

“I-I welcome you doing your own research on vaccines, but I would invite you to go *further* and enroll as a subject in as many early-stage clinical studies as possible.”

What I’m referring to is, like, someone who through no fault of their own becomes the main character on Twitter for a day and then consequently gets targeted for ongoing harassment by Kiwi Farms.

Something I think is worth noting is that humor and canceling are effective under very limited circumstances: that is, humor and canceling are effective when they further harm already marginalized people.

"I-I welcome you doing your own research on vaccines, but would invite you to go further and experiment with getting the vaccine yourself." Wait, no, that might actually be a good line...

New cursed idea: Joe Rogan interviews Kier Starmer.

The idea of referring to one's SO as "brother" has me imagining a couple whose endearments are all straight out of WWE. Mostly this just includes Randy 'Macho Man' Savage's "Oooooooh yeeeeeaaaaaahh" applied at deeply inopportune moments.
