It does seem to do auto-recognition, but in order for your entry to be considered "research grade" it needs another account to confirm your photo, at least from what I've learned using it a bit more.

Technically it does have an automatic image recognition app - it's called Seek, and it's not amazing, but it still submits to iNaturalist where people go "yeah, that's a dock leaf"

Interesting thing about iNaturalist (we're encouraged to use it in my job), there's an identify-from-picture function but it doesn't seem to work on automatic image recognition, but rather you wait for other users to identify the species, as well as similar species logged in the same area. This means that it's not immediate but it struck me that it works. You can even look at the profiles of the people who ID'ed your photo.

To Joey's point about indigenous people's relationships with the land he's correct about them actually having to overcome human nature to feel a connection with the land rather than some innate quality which makes them somehow distinct. The aniishinabeg nations have a very interesting story about this where they insult the deer nation by refusing to use all parts of the animal when they hunt it, so the deer nation relocates to be away from them. After a period of famine and despair, since young people in the nation go find the deer and convince them to renegotiate a treaty with the aniishinabeg, wherein they agreed to only take what they needed and use every bit possible as a sign of respect for the body of the deer. What I'm saying is everyone should read The Gift is In the Making by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson. It's a great read

I had to get my phone fixed recently, honestly I've been enjoying being without all the apps. I've ordered an mp3 player and I think I'm going to lock up my phone while out and about, other than using it to take pictures for stuff like seek/inaturalist. It's been really cutting down on the feeling of distress of not doing anything and being kinda bored but also just scrolling a lot. Honestly the main thing I've been missing out on is having the time? I mean I don't have a watch, and barely any places have clocks on the wall. Either way great episode, and if you wanna make your lawn into a bit more of a meadow plant some yellow rattle to weaken the grass, and then just sow a local wildflower mix (plenty of uk wildflower sites just google it).
