I Just Like Clothes ft. Derek Guy
Added 2023-08-25 10:39:01 +0000 UTCOn this episode, Hussein talks to Derek Guy, who you might know as "the menswear guy" on Twitter. We talk about Derek's sudden twitter fame when he was forced to become a main character after Elon changed the algorithm, and why he thinks his posts about menswear are incredibly popular, even among the most casually dressed, as well as oddballs who get mad about tailoring trousers. We also talk about how he started off as a forums guy, the ways in which forum culture informs the way he thinks about style and design, and whether the scope of the platform economy means that there are no more defining styles or aesthetics anymore.

Re: towards the end - It sounds almost as if Derek is describing how the old Twitter verification was supposed to work? Of course what we learned was that having the verified badges led to some...behaviours...that showed that maybe 'qualified' people were capable of being the biggest fools on the platform.

Unfortunately, it's not mentioned in the show notes. ps. I read David Marx' book on "Status And Culture" after the episode here btw. Can recommend, especially for the final third in which it moves towards the platform internet age.
