One of my Politics lecturers pet theories was that Machiavelli was deeply misunderstood. IN that the prince is obviously a cynically written , please let me out of jail mr medici treatise, that’s trying to curry favour in Florence. Whereas the discourses on livy is much more substantial text about republicanism which is what he really cares about. A real case of the pop hit not matching the rest of the discography

2023-10-11 19:42:32 +0000 UTCAs a trans woman, I am very aware of "threats" when I go out. I'm kinda lucky that I'm more likely to just get catcalled, even wearing sweatpants, than public transphobia, but there is Always a worry that the unwanted attention from men could turn into violence. I learned from Patrick's dadliness podcast that I'm the female version of a Hoss? In the summer I had some guy stop me in the street grinning and said wow you must be a footballer, but when I said thank you? His face fell and he was like "sorry mate". It's kinda funny, but it could have gone very different! I agree, with how really bad true crime brain can impact how you live your life.

2023-10-10 16:46:35 +0000 UTCspeaking as a non-historian, I think about the Late Republic maybe once a day on average re: history education my experience of high school (ordinary-to-good comp) was that a lot was based on the teacher: do you get the cool old lady who teaches you about the three field system with sweets, or the weird racist guy who goes on about the Koreans? Either way I learned basically zilch about the British Empire til sixth form (when we did British Raj) and weirdly quite a lot about the USA
