Quora's Folk ft. Milo Edwards

On this week's Bonus episode, Phoebe is joined by close personal friend of the show, Milo Edwards of Trashfuture and Masters of our Domain, to discuss the very specific kind of posting native to the website Quora. Quora is a questions-and-answers website a la Yahoo answers, but somehow more unhinged.

Ten Thousand Posts is a show about how everything is posting. It's hosted by Hussein (@HKesvani), Phoebe (@PRHRoy) and produced by Devon (@Devon_onEarth).

Anyway, since you’ve done Quora, do you think you’ll ever cover StackExchange, AKA Quora with sliderules? IIRC there’s been a bit of drama in the past couple years around how StackExchange basically doesn’t answer questions anymore but instead yells at people for having the temerity to ask them, before the now-useless non-answer gets Google-bombed by StackExchange’s SEO. (GitHub posting is also quite something, considering the fact that everyone on there is at least ostensibly actually working, unlike LinkedIn, where they’re merely talking about how much work they allegedly do.)

Was the the person who strongly believed in open source/ freedom of information that was driven to suicide, Aaron Schwartz? If so, the documentary about him, The Internet's Own Boy, is very good.

Toby

He was also the co-inventor of the RSS feed language and the Markdown format. An immensely talented guy, and sorely missed

I mean... Hard to tell without a picture, but that's his resume.

The MILF Formerly Known as Tzippi

I'm embarrassed to say I was a three time Quora Top Writer (2015, 2016, and 2017). I still have a Patagonia jacket and a messenger bag to commemorate around somewhere. I never went to the exclusive meetups (because at the time I lived in Florida and was extremely poor and the meetups were always in New York or LA), but there is one person who was a bit more well-known in the trans space than I that routinely was selected that I might have considered hooking up with? Maybe? But that's more "queers who know each other in a space together" stuff more than "eyes wide shut party" stuff lol. I have, to date, about 25k followers on Quora, and I do have some simps. They're... ... ... They sure are. The Top Writer's program is done. They had a writing contest program a while ago where question askers (questioneers?) could ask a question, this was typically a corporate thing) and put money up for the best answer. The *best* answer. THE BEST ANSWER. ***THE COMPANY WOULD PAY YOU FOR THE SUBJECTIVELY BEST ANSWER.*** Anyway, I won about $500 once for saying Starlink is a stupid as fuck idea, and oh hey, looks like I was right. But then I think they realized how bad that idea was and canned it pretty sharpish.

(Lakitu killed Princess Di, though; don’t at me.)

My opinion on Meghan Markle is that she did a truly heroic thing by rescuing Prince Peach from Bowser and the other Koopas in the Mushroom Kingdom, but now I’d really like to never hear from either of them again thank you very much.

Incidentally there’s a place in Australia called Magnetic Island, so named because James Cook’s compasses malfunctioned when he was in its vicinity, a phenomenon that no one since has been able to replicate because the Aboriginal Australians quickly fixed their secret magnetic field generator located under the island, thus saving the entire Southern Hemisphere from certain doom (though unfortunately not from the British).

Quora user: “Why don’t people in Australia fall off the bottom of the Earth?” Physicist: “Because gravity pulls people on all sides of the globe towards the center.” Quora user: “But why does gravity pull people on all sides of the globe towards the center?” Physicist: “Uhhhhhhhhh…” . . . (Gravity is one of those things that we still don’t actually know why it does what it does, even though we can calculate its effects to a shocking degree of precision.)

Phoebe: “There’s no proof the LinkedIn guys can see the insane-people guys, but we can see them, because we’re a different species altogether.” Milo: “We’re outsiders looking in. We’re in the middle of the panopticon.” Phoebe: “This is what Quora is like. Quora is like peering into a zoo.” Quora users: https://youtu.be/x2H7zcqjplc

The guy who was hounded to suicide that Phoebe mentions at the 31-32 minute mark is Aaron Swartz, co-founder of Reddit but also a progressive activist who tried to download the entire JSTOR (academic journals) archive to open-source them. He was a good lad.
