Rebuild of 10k Posts: Eric Garland and the 9/11 of Posts (ft. Devon)

Real heads will remember the first ever episode of Ten Thousand Posts we recorded. The audio was horrible, Phoebe was recording from a phone in a bowl, there were times when Hussein had no idea what she was saying as the line went flat. Nevertheless, we spoke about the most important post, arguably, of the 2010s - one that still underpins much of Twitter discourse today, and set the blueprint for how 'threads' are valued.

Today, we're launching the rebuild of this episode - not least so that people actually can understand what we were talking about. But also, we reflect on the thread's relevance today, and find out what happened to Eric Garland in the post-Trump era: One where, while his political mission has been (sort of accomplished), his real enemy, Edward Snowden, still remains at large in Russia.

With regards to the American institutions-obsessed class segment: 1. You go to Georgetown at 17 or 18, normally. If you're at Georgetown at 15 or 16, you're either in some sort of "get college and HS credit at the same time" scheme or you're massively outperforming your age-group. 2. The revolving door between SpAds and private consultancies is matched in the US civil service just fine. There's a revolving door between medium-high to high level civil servants and private consulting firms in the US, too. That said, the US equivalents of SpAds are more Assistant Secretaries or other political appointees serving under different Cabinet-level appointees. 3. Most of the American institution-obsessed weirdos you'll encounter aren't in any way associated with the civil service. They are just professional class workers in any of a number of high-education fields who've been inundated in the worship of the American form of government throughout their extensive educational careers. It's a whole thing with the American PMC and its desperate need to believe in the lie of meritocracy (because otherwise, the PMC are just workers who are just as at risk of being made precarious or pushed into the lumpenproletariat as any other workers).

I for one agree that “10K Posts: Episode I - George Lucas Special Edition” is a distinct improvement over the original: https://youtube.com/watch?v=v93Jh6JNBng

Wait did Devon add in hussein making agreeable noises to a point they added in after recording? Because if so that rocks incredibly fucking hard, truly bear witness to the power of the editor

Rufus Dean

props to hussein for listening to women (even if he can't hear them)
