The Measure of an Angry Swan ft. James Vincent
Added 2022-07-20 10:14:14 +0000 UTCThis week, we're joined by returning champion and friend of the show James Vincent to discuss his new book, 'Beyond Measure; the hidden history of measurement'. The book tells the story of how measurements developed throughout the course of human history, and how these relatively innocuous-seeming aspects of our life did not arise wholly naturally, were in fact designed by people, and how what is deigned worth being measured gives us an insight into the power structures at play. I wholeheartedly cannot recommend the book enough.
But first, we check in with old friend Elon Musk, in his head-to-head against the greatest poster of all time, Donald Trump.

At around an hour when the idea of Christianity versus indigenous religions and their differing relationships to the land comes up, it's a very interesting conversation but also I wonder how non-Christian empires fit in? Say, Imperial Japan, where you have Shinto and the whole idea of _kami_ going on. Obviously, it didn't stop them from doing tremendous imperal violence, both to their own indigenous people/neighbors (Ainu!!!) and to colonial possessions abroad, but I'm also not sure if they had or ever would have had a system for the mass sale of land like the US did?
