Red Pill ft. Hari Kunzru

This week we're joined by author and journalist Hari Kunzru, author of The Impressionist, Transmission, and Gods Without Men, to discuss his latest novel, 'Red Pill'.

The novel is an exploration of radicalisation, online culture, the alt-right, sanity, and history. A writer signs on for a three-month retreat in Berlin and finds himself extremely micro-managed, finding solace in watching a police show called Blue Lives. I'm underselling the novel here but I truly cannot recommend it enough.
But first, we take a look at an essay written by Hari for the NYRB that explores the same themes.

And even earlier still, we watch a tiktok of a woman meeting some nice happy men with snakes.

You can find Hari at https://twitter.com/harikunzru
find the essay we discuss at https://www.nybooks.com/articles/2020/03/26/trolls-4chan-gamergate-lulz/
and find his novels anywhere books are sold.

I dunno about your providers, but most of mine use the platform MyChart (which conveniently facilitates them sharing information with each other so I don’t have to fill out the same forms over and over again). My psychiatrist and my primary care provider both use iMessage, too, but not really for sensitive information, and the interesting thing with iMessage is that while it does meet the HIPAA standards for encryption, it isn’t technically HIPAA-compliant mainly due to Apple declining to go through the process of certification.

Yes, yes; I know Walter Benjamin has a restraining order against you, but Sam Keeper of Storming the Ivory Tower had a recent series of articles about AI art discussing (among other things) Walter Benjamin that nonetheless I think you might enjoy. This is the fourth article, that touches on him the most: https://www.stormingtheivorytower.com/2022/07/art-beyond-ai.html (idk maybe you could have Sam on the pod sometime? She talks about a lot of posting-adjacent things, though I don’t know of her having been on any podcasts, yet.)

Regarding emailing medical information in the US, I can second Hari's experience: I think you can possibly sign something to give your provider the right to email you HIPPA protected information (a diagnosis would be HIPPA protected), but I've never had a provider who would. However, my current provider will send me an email telling me to check my online chart with them for a new message or test result, etc, which could be what the TikTok in question is talking about. I've definitely gotten diagnostic test results back before my primary care physician had reviewed them yet, including one that identified a potentially serious concern (which, thankfully, was nothing of the sort), for what it's worth.
