You did a Fake your Death ft. Rax King

This week, Just Phoebe is joined by Rax King, half of the Low Culture Boil podcast, to discuss Romance novelist Susan Meachen's recent return from the grave. This ends up as a very long freeform chat about all aspects of publishing, the difficulty of breaking out in that space, and the ethics of demanding your money back from a gofundme that turns out to be fraudulent. But first! We explore the legendary 'You did a no growth. you did an imperialism' tweet!

that's so cool!

Yes, absolutely (and thank you very much!)

For the record I would pay for an individual patreon for you and/or Hussein (or Rax I suppose though I don't know her work as well) to give you both time to pursue writing. Also, the "feminist/post-modern/intersectional reimagining", particularly in Hollywood, ruined it for people who actually want to use the framework of extant texts with the deep understanding of what and how they produce their own meanings to create new semiotic meaning.

She said on RHLSTP that, on Bake Off, she used to shield the stressed and weeping contestants from the camera by loudly slagging off Unilever

I don't know why it keeps putting this here and not where it should be

She's a full time self employed stone mason doing stuff like fireplaces/bird baths, architectural work, sculpture commissions (people's pets frequently). (Plug: Mewstone Masonry)Her friend, also a stone mason, had done some snow carving at some ski resort (snow carving shows are basically a side show for people on skiing holidays), and was invited to the snow carving world champs, so invited my mum as a teammate. She now does a couple of competitions/shows a year and was contacted by a production company for the greatest snowman which she's done the past two years. She's currently in breconridge Colorado doing an event. Snow carving isnt a viable full time job but they are paid for plus compensation and it seems a bit like a free holiday.

'write my little stories and get my little cheque' feels like such a modest request too! yes, this is definitely what i've been told by pals who work in SFF (again, the pay is still risible but the communication seems to be better for whatever reason. sadly it's not really my genre!)

Ten Thousand Posts

truly i can't remember the last time i had to look anything up for myself, thank you to everyone who has been in touch with this week's homework

Ten Thousand Posts

well for a kick off i will need to know about a hundred times more about your ma and her job (also i can well believe it re: Sue Perkins, would be genuinely upset if she turned out to be bad)

Thank you for summing up how bleak it feels being a writer/artist right now lol. If I had any skill with PR or selling I would have done that! All I want is to write my little stories and get my little cheque in the post. I find a lot attractive about the direct-to-patron self-publishing route, but currently can't keep up the necessary pace. I don't think the pay is any better, but I submit exclusively to SFF magazines, and they have often replied with at least a line or two a feedback about what they did and didn't like.

The conductor show was called maestro. Another fact that makes it sound fake is that Goldie was one of the celebrities on it

My mum, a stone mason and part time snow carver, worked as a helper on the holiday special reality TV show "The Greatest Snowman" hosted by Sue Perkins the last two years. She reported that she was very professional, nice to and normal with all the non-famous people working on the set, and was fun to have a drink with after the days work.
