10k Posts' Tv Club: Mr Robot ft. Aaron Thorpe

On this week's bonus episode, Aaron from the Trillbillies, Everybody Loves Communism, and Struggle Session joins us to discuss episode one of the TV show 'Mr Robot' starring Rami Malek. How are its' politics? Does its' depiction of the online ecosystem hold up even 7 years later? Is it possible to make a genuinely revolutionary show in the current media ecosystem? We have answers to these questions, but you could probably guess them!

Ten Thousand Posts is a show about how everything is posting. It's hosted by Hussein (@HKesvani), Phoebe (@PRHRoy) and produced by Devon (@Devon_onEarth).

all the discussion about the empty/aesthetic politics makes me think of Andor - not so much bc it's especially radical but because it takes a materialist approach and the showrunner gives the impression of having read a book ever. looking forward to checking out Severance when i finally get around to it

the Snowpiercer Netflix series definitely has massive revolutionary vibes at some points but sadly cannot relate to posting really so.. other than through the whole obfuscating truth theme and stuff like that

I'm not sure if the writers planned out the full 4 seasons at the beginning, but Mr Robot ends explicitly rejecting the Occupy type approach to activism as a vehicle to meaningfully challenge power. It's also worth saying that the show evolves into something quite different and for anyone who's eaten their vegetables for seasons 1 and 2, do treat yourself to the indulgent, rich dessert of the final 2 seasons.

A lot of the critiques of this first episode are actually explored later in the show's run - the limits of that empty libertarian approach or the limited impact of disrupting debt structures, Elliot's pettiness, the US-centricity of the show are all at least picked at if not broken down fully
