I read somewhere that closing the lid doesn't actually make a difference, the force of the flush expels poo particles either way. although that may have been from a Horrible Science book and at least one recent study suggests it reduces the airborne bacteria concentrations in the 'toilet plume', so make of it that you will

2023-02-08 03:48:13 +0000 UTCI'm Irish but that thing about bathroom taps not being connected to the mains was something i always assumed was true, even though we live in a house built in the 2000s lmao, my mam grew up in old rural Irish houses in the 70's so i assume she grew up with that system. Though I should say its 100% true the bathroom taps in my place are connected to a tank not the mains

When I was a kid, we were told never to drink out of the bathroom taps because the water had been standing in the tank in the attic… but, yeah, I think my sister & I kind of dug the flat taste of it. Oddly, it was my parents who had this rule: my grandparents (who you’d imagine would be more strict about it, having grown up with lead pipes & in houses with all sorts of horrors in the attic) didn’t care much either way
