Appreciate the point Mattie was making with that Roy Lichtenstein anecdote, but to give some context about the material conditions for fine art painters — the primary market price for the Lichtenstein painting from that story was around $500 in 1961 (equivalent to about $5000 now, typically split 50/50 between artist and gallery) and the first secondary market sale was a couple million (money goes to the collector selling the painting and auction house take a commission, artist typically makes no money from those sales). Roy Lichtenstein did become very successful and made a lot of money from painting over the course of his career, and it would have been nice if some of that money had made its way to the cartoonists who made the images his painting referenced. His foundation does have a beautifully thorough archive of his work online, and all the comic references are cited with the artists credited. Sorry this turned into a novel.
