10K Posts Film Club: Mainstream ft. Aaron Thorpe

This week, we're joined by returning champion Aaron Thorpe of the Trillbillies and Struggle Session podcasts, to discuss Gia Coppola's 2020 movie 'Mainstream'. As a critique of youtube stardom and the kind of things people will do in pursuit of that fame, we feel it falls pretty short of the mark!

+1 I really liked Eighth Grade, and it is actually remarkable that it was made by, well, a guy. There's also a great review on Another Gaze about it.

Thanks for the recommendations lads, will add them to the list!

Just in case you haven't seen it, Eighth Grade is really good and worth reading through the "movies about internet content creation" lens. It isn't that to the extent of what this movie seems to be trying, but it is heavily informed by Burnham's own experience becoming an early youtube celebrity, and trying to reflect on what has and hasn't changed since then. Would love to hear your thoughts on it if it ever gets picked up for consideration.

if it's not already on your list i'd be interested to hear what you make of CAM (2018)

I think Dream Scenario is the best movie to thematically tackle modern internet culture.

Hey folks, don't forget to actually introduce or mention the movie in the first five or ten minutes... (!) I mean, without the context of the film's year, director and genre (let alone the name of the movie..) it is kinda hard to parse remarks about how it has potentially aged or its attempt at satire and so forth. :)
