Reader, I posted it: a Booktok Primer ft. Barry Pierce

Arts and Culture critic Barry Pierce comes into the studio to talk to us about 'BookTok , a section of TikTok which reviews and recommend books to viewers, and is often used by publishers to market new releases. Barry talks to us about the array of book content on the platform, and why the most successful content rarely engages with the actual writing itself. We talk about how the abundance of book content online has altered the publishing industry, the pressures many authors have to be posting online and how this environment has made it difficult to engage with and critique literature. Barry also explains how the rise of  the 'book influencer' indicates an aesthetic shift, where on the internet, it is more important to be seen as 'a reader' than to actually read books.

I know I've mentioned it before but I'll say it again: I'm a high school lit teacher and I am about seven weeks from getting my PhD in letters. I tell my students day in and day out that they should love to read and I hope that they have things that they like but that isn't always going to be the point of my class. They're not going to like all the books, I don't even like all of the books, but I still think they're worth teaching. This is especially sharp right now, we're reading Khaled Hosseini's 1000 Splendid Suns and it's a book I find intensely problematic. I actually kind of like it too, though. It's pretty well written. It's mystifying to my students that I simultaneously have a lot of problems with the book but actually like it as a work of writing. I have to keep reminding them that it's all about being able to take a critical look at what you're consuming. I hope when they start getting onto booktok or whatever is coming next they'll have internalized that. Rant over.
