First off: 🤚🏾
Second, let’s talk about Sahel because he’s the elf and I like elves but I accidentally forgot about him. So... him. What about him? What’s his deal? Well, actually funnily enough, of all the characters, he’s known Assorra the longest. They met for the first time when Assorra was four and he was seven. When they met, he was a bit freaked out bc he’d never seen a four-year-old act the way she did. An overly elegant, controlled and even-tempered child who never ran or seemed ungainly. It was just not normal and he was fully aware of that. His family and hers are allies who support the royal family so he had to meet her a lot more than he personally would like.
Speaking of family!! Sahel IS Elven, but he is only half-elven. His mother is human and was one of the oldest daughters of the KwaMal Duchy. To make a long story short, she fucked up and got preggos when she fell in love with a woodland elf. Her family was immensely disappointed and that disappointed seeped into how they would treat Sahel. They were... just not good people to him when he was younger. They essentially really wanted to stuff him away and forget about him but,, it just did not come about. He somehow met Segun and they became friends so they couldn’t be as mean. At some point, the heir of the KwaMal duchy fell ill and never recovered, and the line of succession somehow fell on Sahel.
Well, it works out bc he’s an intelligent, observative man who gets along with everyone (except Siradiou) and the relationships with other noble houses improves a lot when he officially becomes the heir apparent. However, there are still things he struggles with. For one, being half-elven and half-human, he does not feel like he fits with humans. There are things that Elves just, like to do. One of these is that they have a deep love and respect for their natural habitats (there are different kinds of elves. Woodland elves, rainforest elves, coastal elves, desert elves etc etc) and kind of need to be in close proximity to them. Which is really difficult for him because he lives in like, Medieval New York or smth. There’s not a whole lot of greenery there, so it really does a toll on his mental health. On the Elven side, his people have a bit of a hard time accepting him as one of their own. As such, they refused or delayed doing traditional rites and ceremonies that they would normally do for their own. He really struggled to get his ritual tattoos from them, and he got them later than when children get them. And even then, they did not do all the tattoos anyway. Well, despite this, he really works very hard to actually preserve woodlands and the Elven culture. He fights fiercely to prevent greedy nobles from interfering with the sacred ground his people live in. Which is really admirable to me tbh. Sahel is a good guy.
