DISTRESSED DAMSELS: "When Shortie Attacks," pt.1

Wasn't planning on posting these particular jpegs, but I'm currently struggling with maddening computer issues preventing me from scanning anything, so... Time for some slightly less-than-ideal scans from "Yuri vs. Shortie," another incomplete commissioned story from the early 2000s. (I'm calling it "When Shortie Attacks" to avoid a direct Dirty Pair reference in the post title.)

Not only does this one boast very finished pencil artwork, it's also the closest thing to an in-(my)-continuity "real" DP story as you'll ever see outta these damsel-in-distress commissions, as it deals with problematic aspects of the morphing "smartsuits" worn by Kei and Yuri in Dirty Pair: Run from the Future.

Got no time for notes on this one, as I blew all f**king day trying (and failing, repeatedly) to get my old, crappy PC to recognize a f**king Epson scanner driver. Might have to get a new system up and running in a hurry, as I'm completely screwed without the ability to scan artwork. I've long been planning to get an up-to-date PC with plenty o' RAM to run a Cintiq and get serious about working digitally, but have been putting that off for almost a year now; might be time to really get serious about the digital.

Tomorrow: Another bunch of roughs and script pages from Empowered and the Giant-Size Issues, maybe?

That shot makes Yuri's legs look fantastic.

Sorry to hear about your laptop! My PC recently died so I feel your pain. Not sure if this would be ideal for you but I got a Thinkpad X1 at Costco and absolutely love it. Awesome specs, great screen, great battery, durable, and it has every type of port you can imagine. I've been using it for Photoshop and InDesign and am very happy with the performance.

Hey, there are perfectly sound and non-sketchy reasons to have a hidden remote restraint mode in a smartsuit setup. Most obvious would be as an anti-theft measure; if some jabroni grabs it and tries to use it, on go the restraints, and then the suit starts flashing messages/sounding alarms/transmitting location data. Other reason would be in case some jerk hijacks one or god forbid both of the Angels with software/neuroviruses/drugs/memetic agents/tricking Yuri into thinking she's in a sim again/etc. Such capabilities might well have saved lives had they been available before, and could do so in the future. As for the whole hiding those capabilities thing, makes it more difficult for a hijacked Angel to incapacitate her counterpart. Also, keeps Kei and Yuri from screwing around with the restraint mode when bored and somehow blowing up something important in the process. On the "new PC" side of things, I think the best quick option in your neck of the woods on either the buy/build side might be Micro Center if you're willing to brave the traffic and the drivers that make Kei look like a sound insurance risk by comparison. They're one of the few big box stores that carries decent prebuilts and a good parts selection.

Hey, cheer up. We're a fair way short of 2141, so we don't know anything definitive about our timeline vis-à-vis this one. For all any of us know, this is a rigorously accurate depiction of our future. (And that's not even accounting for more simulationist viewpoints.)

Clothes that can tie up the wearer AND self destruct on command. Truly we live in the darkest timeline, we need this tech. Heh.
