1990 Dirty Pair illo for San Diego Comic-Con
Added 2019-07-17 13:03:15 +0000 UTCIn honor of San Diego Comic-Con this year—which, alas, I'm not attending, due to hotel-related shenanigans—here's an illo I drew for the con's booklet thingie back in 1990, not long before starting work on the miniseries Dirty Pair: A Plague of Angels. (I think.)
Pencils and inks by me, and lettering by the great Tom Orzechowski. I don't think that my friend Tomoko Saito did the screentones on this one, as the tone choices are too unimaginative and by-the-book to be hers—which means I must have cut 'em myself. (I'm oddly bugged by the fact that the Lovely Angels' irises aren't toned.) Note the X-acto-blade scraping on the tones' highlights and edges; this was year or two before I figured out that you could use an abrasive ink eraser to attain much smoother and aesthetically pleasing effects.

This illo takes me way back (I was 20 in 1990 and reading your Dirty Pair work but I think I missed SDCC that year). Sorry you won't be at the Con. Still regret my dumb budgeting could not afford a commission from you last time you were there.
