Distressed Damsels: Suddenly, shockingly, more EMPOWERED vol.12 pages!

Been quite a while since the last time I posted any pages from the initial story I was drawing for Empowered vol.12, yet over the weekend I was able to knock out three more pages from that DiD-riffic flashback scene. In fact, these pages aren't so much a continuation of the narrative seen earlier, but rather a semi-Metatextual Emp interlude that would be intercut with the rest of the previous pages; here, she's discussing her (former) self-consciousness re: the "mmph"-ing issue.

Promisingly, my drawing arm didn't suffer much of a flare-up of pain or irritation during this sequence, which is a good sign, though I wouldn't read all that much into it, as these background-free pages weren't all that challenging to draw.  Still, as I mentioned earlier, I really would like to stagger through one more at least partially penciled Empowered volume before I transition over to working digitally.

I should note that I often start out a difficult or hard-to-get-started Empowered volume by jumping straight to a damsel-in-distress episode, A) because I want to get the book's arguably mandatory DiD content squared away before moving on to other stories; and B) because I can knock these scenes out in my sleep.

Don't think I'm going to feature "hair out of the way" Emp all that much in the rest of the book, as holy crap is our heavier, fuller-figured heroine ever, ah, racktastically prominent  without camouflaging hair I usually draw as part of her default look. Huzzah!

By the way, a follow-up on last week's serialization of the playful Emp/Thugboy bedroom cosplay roleplaying scene removed from Empowered vol. 9: I've decided the sequence was too much fun to leave out of "official Empverse continuity," so I'm planning to add it to Empowered vol.12, even if only as a flashback (and even if the art will look notably different from the rest of the book). In that case, don't look now, but with those 11 unpublished vol.9 pages added on to the 16pp I've drawn for this first story, I've already finished 27pp from vol.12. Not too shabby, folks!

In closing, my rough sketches for the preceding pages:

I really did enjoy the way you touched upon some of that in your wonderful Gen13 run (Poor Roxy!). Body image and self-esteem in a world full of literally superhuman figures has always struck me as a vastly unexplored topic, which is one of the (many) reasons I love Empowered.

I rather like the idea of Emp being the mouthiest gagged Superheroine ever. It's a nice bit of character growth and shows she is more confident than she used to be.

Thanks much! Yeah, unmasked Emp is a fun change of pace; I might try to feature more of that imagery in EMP12.

Certainly possible, though we've not seen 'em. (The character Jugganaut is (in)famous along these lines, but she's apparently so intimidating that few dudes mess with her.) If I ever get around to a long-planned story about superheroic body types, that issue might be addressed.

Which one is that, out of the three today? Angry masked Emp, or the third page?

The racktastic comment reminded me of something I've always wanted to ask - is there a "Power Girl"-esque figure in the Empverse who gets as much unwanted attention paid to her chest as poor Emp does to her behind? And if so, would they/have they ever interacted before?

If you still have the rough of page 12, I will totally buy it at Heroes (I'm building up a pile, lol). I really want to use the bottom right finished Emp on that page as an icon, such a great expression. These are really great in many ways, not just in the DiD content (the shading, witty banter, and layouts).

Last Panel Emp is awesome. It's rare but wonderful when she gets to be cocky and...man, I want to say "haughty" but that feels like is has negative connotations, but its fits...cocky and haughty.

Judgy, commentating Emp is best Emp. It's the best thing about her, that personality that shines through no matter what she's being challenged by. Also, some AMAZING expression-work here throughout. Emp's wry expressions as this progresses are fantastic. XD
