Yet more EMPOWERED vol.12 Emp & Spooky pages, plus work stages!

Wellp, it's been over two months since my last Empowered vol.12 update, as I stalled out over lack of interest in drawing this long and very important conversation scene. (You might want to check out the previous installment or two if you've understandably forgotten the narrative thread.)

Anyhoo, since then my interest in drawing this g-d volume might—I say, might—have been revitalized by a truly bold and radical (IMHO) reimagining of the book's overall story. In fact, I've thrown most of my original plans for this installment in favor of something very, very different.

However.

I'm damn near 40 pages into this existing, fairly conventionally structured Empowered story, so I'm loath to ditch it. So, even as the fabled Empowered Vol.12 Restart gets underway, I'm gonna hop back to this sucker and whittle away at it from time to time, with  the pages above representing my latest attempt at said whittling.

Note that I'm messing around with a whole bunch of experimental techniques that will be used elsewhere in the book, such as plenty of white-line overlays, some different stabs at facial shading, and a wacky stunt with lettering (UNCOMFORTABLE SILENCE CONTINUES) that emulates a technique I use in Clip Studio Paint. Some tests worked out better than others—that big Spooky close-up is a g-d disaster, TBH, but better to have experimented and failed than to not have tried at all.

Alas, no time left today for  further notes, so you folks are on your own as to figuring out the significance of the different roughs, work stages & unused drafts.

Now, on to the Real Empowered Vol.12 Restart! (Note the capitalization.)

TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: Something damsel-in-distress-related for the $5+ crowd, though right now I have no g-d idea what that might be!

"better to have experimented and failed than to not have tried at all. " TRUER WORDS NEVER SPOKEN. Man, loving these pages.

KranberriJam

Don't be a bondage-martyr, Emp. Let it go and balance out. The visual effects really stand out on page 2, but I don't know if I'm in love with them.

Strypgia

Wow, the new techniques look great. By the time you do finish this story you're going to have a completely different art style.

JoJack86

The whole of that second page is just so... wow!

Otaku Twenty-Four Seven

Are the other tied up heroines on this page alternate version of Emp?

The Silver Socialist

Ah, but remember how rooted Emp's reason for heroism is in preventing the things that have happened to her from happening to others? It's not an easy decision. Certainly warrants the page of silent contemplation.

Lex of Excel

One could read it as some of Spooky's old vindictive nature shining through. The same attitude that led her to cursing Emp to begin with.

Lex of Excel

these are beautiful

As much as I looked forward to Vol.11 I think I’m even more interested in seeing where you’re taking Vol.12. Can’t wait to see more behind the scenes posts like this in the future. P.S. - EMP’s hair on the second image? *chefs kiss* Fantastic. XD

The D-Wrek

I like that take on Emp on page 2.

PixelThis

Wow, this is some of the best art I've seen in a long time, even from you!

A Patreon of the Ahts

"An entire priviledged demographic of previously bondage-free capes will now get a taste of your everyday humiliation". Imma be honest here, I don't see the downside :D

Michael Campen

Reverse the curse, REVERSE THE CURSE!!!!

John Staton

man, the style shift here looks really good.

e-reptile disfunction

Glad to hear you're inspired again!

With great power...
