1993's DIRTY PAIR: I HONESTLY HATE YOU, pt.1 of 2

Behold, brand-new scans of recently unearthed photocopies of the 1993 story The Dirty Pair: I Honestly Hate You, originally done for a Dark Horse San Diego Comic-Con giveaway book, then reprinted as a bonus feature in the DH TPB collection of the first DP miniseries Biohazards.

I consider this story a bit of a rarity, given that I have no remaining copies of either the SDCC "floppy" or the Biohazards TPB, nor do I have any idea where the hell the original artwork for the pages wound up. Some of you long-time DP collectors might have seen this story before, but I guarantee you've never seen the full-bleed artwork for the pages like this; for the uninitiated, I Honestly Hate You was published with artwork extending to the edges of the printed pages, as indicated by the crop marks on each corner—aka the so-called "full bleed," which I used constantly during this period.

WACKY PATREON SIDE NOTE: After I typed the previous two paragraphs, Patreon just popped up the flagged message, "It looks like you might be promoting a raffle, which is outside of our Benefit Guidelines."  I assume the word "rarity" touched that off, much as use of the word "Y**i" autotriggers a different message. Good thing I'm not doing My Little Pony fan art, huh? (Or MLP y**i material, for that matter.) For the record, Patreon, I am not promoting a raffle here.

I'm presenting the pages as both grayscale and bitmap scans of the reduced-scale photocopies; neither approach is especially accurate at reproducing the delicate Japanese screentones I was using to shade these pages, alas.

Whoops, I'd intended to dash off a few notes about these first 4 pages, but ran outta time blithering about Patreon flags. Sorry! Anyhoo, check back in here on Thursday for the second half of this story, okay?

TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: As usual on a Monday, time for s'more Distressed Damsels content for the $5+ tiers, though I'm not currently clear as to exactly what that content might be. Let's find out together, shall we?

Cameos by Priss and Nene from Bubblegum Crisis and Briareos and Deunan from Appleseed, too.

Steven Ng

Love the Gunsmith Cats cameo!

Erin O'Loughlin

Still hoping that we get a DP omnibus someday...

Dean Reilly

I wish this had been colored along with SimHell.

Mr. Neil

Yuri's 'defensive use of a dinosaur' nearly made me spit out my drink. :)

Strypgia

I was just thinking, 'this looks just like SimHell!'

Saw you at SDCC 1999. Went through the Dark Horse signing line and left. My Australian friend Royd told me you had originals and I ran back to buy page 5 and some pencil prelims. You gave me a page with a Mr. Mxyptlk stat and an original background. That was a great time.

Steven Ng

Yes, I adore Sim Hell!

Mr. Neil

Y is such a fangirl.

This was how your style looked when I first discovered you. Issue #1 of SimHell was the first book of yours that I picked up. While I adore all the ways your style has evolved over the years, I will always have a fondness for this period. Thanks for sharing, sir!

Yeah, the DH version of Biohazards is surprisingly hard to come by; the original Eclipse TPB is like $5 on eBay, but I had to pay like $30 to some California book dealer on Amazon marketplace to get my DH copy.

Burninator

This. I'm all over this, and SimHell.

This is peak Dirty Pair for me. I love the style during this era. Artistically, this is my favorite look for the Pair.

Mr. Neil

It's more likely the flag was from the use of the phrase "giveaway book" in the first paragraph. Gosh darn Patreon for having a trigger happy system such as this... For the record yes I have one of these fabled biohazards TPBs and have seen the story there, but it's great to see these scans here in their magnificence, and that Yuri has great taste in Kenichi Sonoda vidcasts.
