VINTAGE CON SKETCHES: DD & ELEKTRA (2001 vs. 2016) edition!

Working my way through my CON SKETCH folder on the ol' hard drive, found a pair of illos of Marvel's Daredevil and Elektra! The most recent, two-color piece was drawn at Emerald City Comic-Con four or so years ago, and was clearly based on the then-recent Netflix Daredevil show:

Note that, as usual for modern superhero fare, the TV version of ol' Hornhead's costume is maddeningly complicated, replete with seams aplenty and all sorts of different fabric  textures.

The next piece is line is a scan (from a photocopy, I think) of a notably more dynamic, B&W con sketch of the pair from waaaaay back in 2001:

Some wonky anatomy and exaggeration on display (with DD's shoulder area and super-bendy billy club, respectively), true, but also a greater degree of energy and stylization which arguably makes it a stronger piece than the less-wonky 2016 illo.

Speaking of "arguably," which con sketch do you prefer, Patrons? Old-school, turn-of-the-millennium B&W, or new-(ish)-school partial color? Sai-wielding Elektra in the TV outfit, or in the do-raggish comic costume? Lemme know!

NEXT MONDAY ON THIS HERE PATREON: More life drawings, as usual!

Although it's no doubt a lot of work, I like the increased detailing of the 2016 costumes, it feels like they have more "heft", or something like that.

Definitely digging the 2001 one...

2001 looks a lot more dynamic, yes.

Didn't watch the DD show. But I like the 2016 Elektra drawing although not familiar with the costume. Re: 2001 DD... one word comes to mind... spindly. The 2001 Elektra is also nice.

I like the newer semi-color sketches you do, but the 2001 sketch’s content is nicer and more dynamic. As for costumes, I think TV Daredevil is cool because his suit looks like it can take a hit versus the classic tights. However, I much prefer “actually a ninja” comic Electra to the leather-clad TV version.

Once you pointed out that the more recent sketch was tv-inspired, I realized how well you had captured Charlie Cox's face. The 2016 sketch is unmistakably the better-drawn of the two but yeah the 2001 action shot has more vitality.
