DIRTY PAIR: SIM HELL design sketches

Behold, a rare few design sketches for the first two issues of my 1992 miniseries Dirty Pair: SimHell (which was how the title was supposed to read, a la SimCity, but I never clarified that matter). I know that more of these are a-lurking somewhere in my thousands of files, but I've yet to find any more; if I do, I'll surely post 'em here down the road.

Most of the hardware didn't actually get used in the published miniseries, with the notable exception of the Lovely Angel spaceship redesign:

Forward-swept wings, as a tribute to the Grumman X-29! A "hammerhead" bow, as I've always loved those; can't decide whether that's an exaggerated Blockade Runner riff, or possibly a reference to a Rick Sternbach design from some "spaceships of Star Trek" book I read in the 80s.

Kinda dinky in size, though. If I'd ever done another published DP series, I would've redesigned the Lovely Angel as a much larger ship.

TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: This week's Damsel-in-Distress-related post for the $5+ Patron tiers features some 1998-era Vintage Con Sketches of far-future mage Jamadagni in (anachronistic) witchy peril. BURN THE (SEXY) WITCH!

Love those designs!

A lot of fond memories of SimHell. :)

For the Hammerhead bow, I was thinking the SA-43 fighter, from the "cancelled too soon, because it was on FOX" show, Space: Above and Beyond.

Now this is what I'm talkin' 'bout!! Good ol' hardware porn!!! I always loved pouring over model sheets from anime art books.

More memories from some of my earliest and favourite manga back in the days of MANGA MANIA. I remember loving the resolution to that story too.

Cool just needed to know that was the case, thanks Burninator

Just checked the Help: "Once your payment increase processes, you'll have access to your new tier content immediately. ", so if you boost your tier after the billing it will start immediately and charge you immediately.

Burninator

Thanks, I mean you sold the higher tier on me with the latest social media post you made so I'm going to go for it anyway, just with it being so close to the end of the month I figured if it makes no difference (in that you can access older posts in your new tier) I'd just rather do it in a way that's the least confusing for my outgoings on Patreon

Alas, while I have a TON of design stuff from FATAL BUT NOT SERIOUS kicking around, much less SH material is available.

Er, honestly not sure about that. Will take a look through the Help menus when I get a chance, though I can't promise that I'll dig up a definitive answer.

I suspect the Lovely Angel's relatively diminutive size may actually be from an old typo/misread: Way back in Biohazards, she was listed as a 30 meter ship, which also seems vaguely right for her SimHell scale, while the Lovely Angel in the original light novels was an 80 meter ship, at least according to the Dark Horse translation. Given the ease of confusing a 3 and an 8, I suspect some wires got crossed back in the '80s and nobody ever noticed. Bonus fun fact: LucasArts actually came out with an afterlife-simulator game back in '96 in which you do indeed build a simulated Hell(and a SimHeaven FWIW), but they called it Afterlife, presumably to avoid trademark problems with either you or Maxis.

Burninator

Yeah I love that you also share the design work for stuff that doesn't make it into the finished work, so we can all appreciate!

This is awesome. Thanks.

Slightly off-topic question, if I want to up to a higher tier am I better off waiting until the next billing then changing it after payment has gone through as it will then charge the difference, or would that instead start from next month?

Otaku Twenty-Four Seven

Incredible! I hope you are able to dig up more SimHell golden nuggets like these in the future. Thank you SO much for sharing these!
