Art requests from the $20 tier (part 1)!

Got only a few minutes to slap on some text for this post, so here goes!

Above are a trio of Clip Studio Paint sketch sets based on art requests from the $20 tier; still got a bunch of Party of Two-based suggestions from this tier that I need to get to, but I'll toss those in a future post once I get around to 'em.

Tough slog getting through these sets, as I'm a bit outta practice on iPad CSP sketching at present. (Let us speak not of the absolute disaster of my attempted Cintiq & PC set-up, which has gone nowhere fast.) The life drawings in the last set, though, felt refreshing and nowhere near as uninspired and hacked-out. (I'd really, really like to get back into semi-regular life drawing, folks.)

I'll put up another post about this topic soon, but some big changes to my workflow and time available for Patreon-ing are in store. Looks like experimentation with the ol' digital transition will be put on the back burner shortly, as last week I belatedly figured out a way to radically reconceptualize Empowered vol. 12 in a way that would make it interesting to me again as both an artist and a writer.

Need to get some other real-world crap outta the way first, but in a few weeks I'm hoping to go back to work on full-time on Empowered and finish off this (possibly conclusive) volume as fast as I can claw my way through it. That aggressive approach, if it works out—and that is definitely a very big if—will leave me very little time for art requests while still keeping weekdaily (or at least very frequent) Patreon posts a-flowin'.

More on this matter later, needless to say!

TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: The DISTRESSED DAMSELS Wednesday feature for the $5+ tiers rolls onward, with more pages from an early-2000s commissioned story of a familiar damsel resisting distress from an increasingly obnoxious series of goofy (AF) baddies.

It doesn't sound like wanting to rush the story and move onto something else so much as recognizing the format the stories are published in isn't viable anymore. I know it can be frustrating to hear about characters and stories we've grown to love talked about in this way, but at the end of the day if the creator can't make a living off the stories then something has to change.

There are a lot of loose plot threads in Empowered. We still don't know where her suit came from. We don't know what Thugboy is hiding about his past or if He's the Holly Avenger, We barely know anything about how Emp fits into the plans to stop the aliens that are treating the people of Earth like a cross between the Trump Show and a snuff film. We don't know how or Why Mindfuck is in Hell. Don't make the same mistake Game of Thrones did. If you're going to end the series you can't do it in just one volume.

That’s an interesting point, especially since with a publication like Empowered where there can be years between volumes. I hadn’t thought about it in a long time but I knew the comics industry had been seriously contracting due to a number of factors. I concluded the main purpose of comics now (at least at the major publishers) is to use them as a low-risk idea incubator for ideas that can be turned into movies or TV series. I’d be very interested in hearing what you decide the best course of action for the series is. It seems like there should be (and I don’t know maybe there is already) an online distribution center where parties (companies or individuals) could publish and sell digital comics with less overhead. That would allow you to sell stories as short or as long as you want and publish them on your own schedule.

Well, I'm hoping that EMPOWERED will eventually continue in some different form, but the present, very specific OGN format is clearly no longer viable. (And I had reached that conclusion well before Covid-19 absolutely HAMMERED the comics direct market.)

I don't think I said that I found that question stupid, just annoying, as I heard that same query all the time back then. I even addressed that sentiment in the closing spread for vol.8; however, I wrote that over seven years ago, and EMPOWERED's situation is very different now. (And not in a good way.)

Adam, great work as always! Thanks for taking the time to label the sandcastle :) Sad to hear that the next volume of Empowered might be the last.

C-c-conclusive? Say it ain't so!

You said it was stupid for journalist to keep asking you when unpowered is going to end. You compared it to asking when Batman or Spider-Man was going to end. 😢

The Spanker is just... wow. Feels like a Badcape who got into things _just_ to go after Emp's booty. The last minute life drawing again looks as sharp and vivid as ever, like it could be a still frame from a moving image. Emp's face in the beach pic seems a bit off, though.

Strypgia

AWESOME! Thank you for taking my request Adam, Emp's compromising position here is really cute and I love her reaction to the Spanker's very existence as a villain. Love the serious tone you did on him as well as he prepares to discipline a bewildered heroine, I hope this was a fun sketch! I am also a huge fan of Sulong Carrot (not sure how familiar you are with One Piece but it's a fun manga, and the rabbit is super fun in particular) and the Mulan, both look great in your unique style. Lots of good requests on this round.

DimZebra

Holy crap, The Spanker! Steve Gerber's 1976 Punisher parody from the HOWARD THE DUCK treasury edition! And yeah, mid-70s DEFENDERS one-offs are about as far from canonical as Marvel gets these days, but some of us Olds remember.

Kevin J. Maroney

One piece + AW = Win.....thanks for your hard work as always

Thank you for the Rogue! Nicely done (as usual), and while (as you had indubitably stated) it is not her best outfit (I agree) there is a bit of nostalgia attached to said outfit as it reminds me of my childhood and that period of time when certain X-Women outfits were “unique” to say the least... as I do recall a horrendous Sprite outfit that looked more rummaged than fashionable and also found Dazzlers disco look was overplayed well into the 80’s. I digress, though, and thank you again for a piece well done!
