DESIGN TUESDAY: Initial chara-design sketches for a mid-2000s project, pt.1

I'm being a tad vague in this post's title and description, but here are my initial design sketches for the cast of the 2004 mecha-team Marvel miniseries Livewires, written by me and featuring interior artwork by the great Rick Mays (and eventually me as well, during the last three issues of the series as deadline issues and technical complexities arose).

I did the cover art for the miniseries, with colors by the also great Ryan Kinnaird:

...and designed the mecha cast , such as initial viewpoint character "Stem Cell":

Next up is the character "Social Butterfly," whose design might just have influenced that of another cute blonde heroine of mine likewise first created in 2004. Note that I hadn't yet figured out her, uh, "supranym" by this point in the project's early development:

Before I move on to the rest of the team next time, enjoy two pages of even earlier design sketches, as I was working out my very first ideas for the characters:

Note that I briefly considered making Stem Cell's glasses actually show human eyes as a false image camouflaging "mecha eyes," but dropped that wacky approach in favor of a metaphorical use of the image on Livewires #1's cover.

Printed-edition-wise, I definitely do recommend picking up the individual issues, as the small-format TPB and its not-great paper stock do not showcase the miniseries terribly well.

Lovelovelove this series. I really need to pick up the individual issues sooner rather than later.

I'm pretty sure that Marvel owns the characters. A few of them have showed up in various titles since Livewires finished.

Livewires was a blast to read. Wish I could see them running amuck in the regular Marvel universe.

Strypgia

I love your character design drawings and model sheets.

Steven Ng

Another Livewires fan here. Some of the design pages were included in the collected edition, which was nice. And clearly some people at Marvel like them, Gothic Lolita teamed up with Deadpool and the whole gang appeared in Agents of Wakanda, issues 5 and 6.

TF Commando

Loved this series. Wish there could be a sequel. Alas, the rights are probably tied up.

MY fanfic is better off lost...

You and me both! Sadly lost in the mists of time and many house moves and associated paper purges since though.

Otaku Twenty-Four Seven

I LOVED that series, I reread it about twice a year. I even wrote crappy fanfiction on what happens afterwards.
