Work stages on EMPOWERED DELUXE vol.1's cover illo, pt.1: B&W ahoy!

Here's the initial rough, pencils & inks for my character-packed cover for Empowered Deluxe vol.1, which compiled the first three regular Empowered volumes along with a whole lotta bonus material in a limited-edition hardcover collection.

In retrospect, I'm not at all sure that the "limited-edition" aspect of Empowered Deluxe was helpful at all, as pretty much every reader I've ever spoken to about this matter (and I ask this of every congoer who brings me a Deluxe hardcover to sign) just shrugged indifferently about the fact that the hardcovers were "one-offs." Did that make any difference to you folks?

AFAIK Dark Horse has no interest in reprinting the Deluxe hardcovers and their extensive bonus material, but in theory I might consider doing a Kickstarter for 'em down the road. (Well, in theory.)

Anyhoo, I have so many color guides, corrections & iterations of the colors left kicking around that I'll leave all that stuff for a second Work Stages post later in the month, okay?

UPDATE: Tacked on a montage-ish cropped compilation image of the work stages, which I'd worked up for Twitter promotion purposes. Enjoy?

TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: Time for more Vintage Con Sketches, I assume!

I'm a little crazy, so I own all versions of Empowered, including all the original trade paperbacks, deluxe hardcovers (and the paperback reprints), all the comics and the trades of those (plus the sketchbook). I know I'm not the everyday reader though! I have to really love a series to buy multiple copies.

He's referring to differing spellings of the word Captain.

Technically possible, I suppose, though I have to admit that I hadn't considered such an option.

I only have one or two left on hand (IIRC), so I''m afraid that would be possible only if I someday do go the Kickstarter route.

And thanks for the opinion! (And yes, I'd definitely agree.)

Understandable!

I already had the reprinted volumes, so I couldn't justify paying out for a hardcover collection of material that I mostly already had.

Dean Reilly

Well his name is Capitan Rivet, so...

Pat Bryant

I just noticed something looking at the roughs... Capitain Rivet as opposed to Captain Rivet

Limited edition seems to be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, there's the collector's value, as you own a first printing. But it's a first printing of reprint material, so really, is that the value inherent in the work? I'd say not. Planetary has an omnibus they put out of all 27 issues, all in one great big unwieldy book. Which would be hard to get at $100, usually more on the secondary market. I own the first 4 TPBs and could probably fill them in affordably, and then I've got a reading copy of the saga. Then they started reprinting, and I bought one from Barnes & Nobles for fifty bucks. By keeping the work and editions in print, you guarantee ongoing sales over time, as new readers embrace the material, discover there are omnibus editions and seek those out. There will still be those seeking original editions and earlier printings, sure. but I feel by catering to a larger market over time you insure a much better flow of both the material into the hands of readers, but also of income stream for the creator. Only my opinion, and because you asked.

For space reasons, I have a pretty strict "only one copy of a comic" policy, but I would absolutely pay for a printed version of the additional material from the Deluxe volumes.

I'm missing the first deluxe volume from my collection and would love to pick it up sometime, just preferably direct from yourself and not through some yahoo's inflated ebay price!
