My way-too-tight layouts for "Unnamed Robot Comic" #1, pt.1!

Behold, my first few pages of layouts for 2004's Marvel mecha-team miniseries Livewires, titled here as "Unnamed Robot Comic" as I'm more than a tad dubious about identifying this series of posts publicly. Keep this to yourselves, won't you? (The joke of using the title "Unnamed Robot Comic", by the way, is that Livewires' mecha protagonists consider the term "robot" to be an offensive slur.)

The final art on the series was done by my old bud Rick Mays, but as you can see I cranked out insanely tight, fully dialogued, Sharpie-and-pencils layout pages for the series ahead of time; not only was this approach a faaaar from cost-effective use of my worktime, but in retrospect I feel that these layouts constricted Rick from drawing the beautiful faces and figure work he produced for other books. (Oh, well.)

Anyhoo, stand by more more Unnamed Robot Comic layouts shortly, okay?

NEXT WEEK ON THIS HERE PATREON: The new "M/W/F+" posting schedule kicks in with a non-fixed selection of posts, so who knows what the heck I might post on Monday? (Not Life Drawings, for once, which will now appear later in the week, probably.)

Not as happy as I was, given how burnt-out and blocked I was at the time I had to draw the final cover; saving myself days of work by reusing that illo was a huge relief.

I was so happy my Stem Cell commission became the Livewires #6 cover.

Man it would be wild if any of these characters showed up in live action Marvel stuff. It might not be *that* far-out even, they seem to love taking more obscure characters and making a "crunchier" version. E.g. I re-watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier recently and I'd totally forgotten Batroc Ze Leaper was in it. (Cornfed's A.I.M. tag was what set me off thinking this, since it's been prominent in the M.O.D.O.K. stop-motion cartoon but was also used in Iron Man 3)

I would totally read a comic done in this style.

Rick Mays managed to mimic your look really well, in that case. I really liked Live... er, Unnamed Robot Comic a lot. More fun than Yet Another X-Men Spinoff, for sure.

Woo Livewires! Always enjoy rereading this crew.
