This month's Design Tuesdays feature will cover my initial character designs for the 1997 DC Comics Prestige Format (ooh!) one-shot Titans: Scissors, Paper, Stone. Today, we're kicking things off with the design sheets for protagonist Jamadagni and her ill-fated ex-boyfriend Alec; alas, I'm scanning these from rather crappy photocopies, hence the less-than-ideal repro quality.

These repurposed spacesuits are based on concepts from Marshall Savage's book The Millennial Project: Colonizing the Galaxy in 8 Easy Steps, which was a huge influence on the last few Dirty Pair series as well as Titans.

"Mudra of contempt" was a hyper-obscure reference to the great Walter Jon William's bold and Big-Idea-heavy SF novel Aristoi, which likewise was a big influence on my mid-to late-90s work.

Those lines on Jamadagni's neck are, IIRC, supposed to be indications that she once lived in an aquatic environment and, in effect, possessed some form of gills.

Alec Swanwick's last name was an homage to the also-great SF author Michael Swanwick, whose bold and Big-Idea-heavy novel Vacuum Flowers was a huge influence on my early Dirty Pair work (and beyond).
Next time around, we check in on the Titans character named after my Kubert School roommate (er, unless I bump her to week after next).
TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: Time for the $5+ Patron tiers to get their weekly dose of damsel in distress imagery with the next pages from "Dandelion Hair vs. Rather Generic Jungle Girl."
