DISTRESSED DAMSELS: EMPOWERED vol.12's deathtrappery!

Behold, another exclusive preview from the upcoming Empowered vol.12! (We're not yet officially on the release schedule, so I can't give you a exact date.)

Wellp, I shan't spoil things by telling you exactly why Deathmonger has morphed into Deathtrapmonger, but I can hint that I'm addressing a bunch of hitherto unaddressed superhero tropes at one point in the book—and this time, the concept being explored is the old-school supervillainous deathtrap.

Gotta say, this sequence was surprisingly fun to work on, despite being considerably more time-consuming than I would have liked. All you deathtrap enthusiasts out there were definitely on to something! (Mea culpa, folks.)

NOTE TO THE $10 & $20 TIERS: Not only did you kind folks add valuable suggestions for Empverse-unexplored capetropes solicited earlier in the month, but later today or tomorrow you'll be getting an expanded version of this post, which will feature a rather saucy third page from this deathtrap scene along with a full set of roughs for the sequence (including some unused panels and straitjacket design sketches).  Gotta admit, it hadn't occurred to me until about 10 minutes ago that I could do expanded posts for the higher tiers; a neat, if belated, insight!

TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: Work stages on another Empowered volume's back-cover illo, IIRC.

Are we sure those are C-Cups?

Am I missing the added post or has it not been posted yet?

If one were so inclined, one could call life the ultimate deathtrap. You start out alive, you're constrained by space-time boundaries, and you die. What DTM has done is re-imagined the classic deathtrap by ignoring the decorative trappings and focused on the philosophical underpinnings. The Ultimate Gauntlet of Gruesome Doom evokes the human struggle for survival in society that not only prevents us from accessing our true potential but also assaults us with mind-boggling dangers with no warning. While this could be done with a buzzsaw or train tracks in the past those concepts are twentieth century icons that represent known knowns; DTM's take is a twenty-first century metaphor that both embraces and decries the conceptual "new normal".

Okay, this made me laugh. I got a kick out of the idea of "what, you think GIRLvills don't want to imperil troublesome and nubile superheroines just as much as the next cape?" (destroys the person asking the question) Can't wait to see where this whole segment goes!

Aidenke

Hate to be pedantic, DTM, but you built an obstacle course instead of the overly eleaborate prison cell/execution device that a deathtrap is. But you do you, ma'am. ^^

Deathtrapmonger does say that she is "stripped of your superpowers", but I don't know if it's the clothing damage or the gear causing that.

Burninator

Awesome, awesome, awesome! Thanks so much for sharing!

Deathtraps, when done right, combine the best elements this world has to offer: super-villainly, technology, kinetic art, bondage, and blonde super-heroines. They're awesome!

So excited for this volume. Seriously man, I thought you couldn't get better than volume 11's art, but DAMN, I am being proven wrong with each new post.

KranberriJam

Can't wait to see how Emp gets out of this. Also, I like the idea of expanded posts.

At what point does a bondage rig cross the line into "wearing clothing over the suit"? It was established early on that she can't wear anything over it or it stops working, but while that may well be a psychological limitation on her part rather than of the suit, this current rig looks like it might "count" as clothing for her limitation to kick in.

Love it! Vol 12 is looking so cool! And funny. And relevant. Love the tropes, love undermining the tropes. Win, win.
