FAILED-PROJECT FRIDAY: The MYSTERY SPORTS CAR dealie, pt.2!

Following up on a Failed-Project Friday post from two weeks ago, here's more of an odd pitch(?) of sorts from 2006 or thereabouts.

If I recall correctly, back then DC Comics was doing an odd product-placement comic of sorts titled Rush City, which featured a sporty-looking Pontiac Solstice (named "Sam," apparently) as driven by, I assume, The Transporter-style badass fella Diego Zhao.

I apparently knew somebody in DC Editorial connected to the book, and was maaaaaybe trying to sleaze my way into working on the title? Alas, I no longer recall any specifics. Nothing came of this effort, of course, but I did produce some character designs and an oddly formatted comic/ storyboard(?) story excerpt, which is seen in all its 6-page glory in today's post.

(For the record, on the sixth page above, I replicated the rather odd-looking shift tree featured in the Rush City comic pages I had been given, rather than searching online and finding out what the heck the Pontiac Solstice's transmission diagram actually looked like. Note that I am still uninterested in finding out if this was accurate or not.)

I can say that Diego Zhao's character designs above are at least partially based on the same Japanese costume photoreference book that I sometimes use for the Empowered character Thugboy, on the sporadic occasions that I actually try to depict him as being of Japanese descent. Yay!

NEXT TIME ON THIS HERE PATREON: No idea, to be perfectly frank, but something will be going up on Monday, if the good DSL allows and the creek don't rise.

This is really cool. I've never seen gunplay and stunt driving combined like this.

Yeahp, that's about what I figured. Remember: NEVER TRUST A COMIC BOOK.

That's a pretty dope sequence, and is really easily followable in terms of action and progression. Pretty great storyboard-meets-comic mood to it all!

As someone who is always interested in utterly pointless bits of trivia even if nobody else cares, I went and checked some photos, and the Solstice's transmission diagram in fact doesn't match the drawing; it's 2-4-R, not R-2-3. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
