FAILED-PROJECT FRIDAY: Our second unsuccessful attempt at a Ryan Kinnaird-drawn DIRTY PAIR miniseries!

Ah, yes, the rarely seen feature Failed-Project Friday returns, after I recently unearthed unscanned printouts of artwork that my bud Ryan Kinnaird worked up in the futuristic year 2000 for a second attempt at pitching a Dirty Pair project intended to be drawn by him and written by me:

A year or two earlier (I think?), we had unsuccessfully worked up samples for a Dirty Pair project along the same lines; in fact, I had earlier worked up script and roughs for the first issue of a miniseries to theoretically be titled Dirty Pair: Eat This! (Pretty sure someone at Dark Horse told me that title was already Dead On Arrival, not that it wound up mattering.) If I ever dig up my page roughs for Eat This! #1, I'll serialize 'em here along with the script.

Alas, Dirty Pair rights-holders Studio Nue and creator Haruka Takachiho had rejected Ryan's earlier samples, which would again be the case this time around.

Behold, some of Ryan's design variations for Kei and Y**i:

And some actual comic samples, with an interesting take on the DP's starship Lovely Angel:

Go figure, Ryan's artwork looked much different 24 g-d years ago: Watch out, Angels!

Lordy loo, it's Shasti, the Lovely Angels' nemesis from my version of the Dirty Pair! Can't tell ya what she was up to, as Ryan worked up this story sample on his own. (In fact, Shasti's original design comes from an idea I had concocted for a rather blatant DP ripoff project back in my Kubert School day.)

Anyhoo, once again Studio Nue rejected Ryan's art samples, just as they did with the other artists I ran by them for potential further Dirty Pair spinoff projects (whose work you might see here, if I ever stumble across the relevant printouts).

Note that it never occurred to me to pitch a non-Dirty Pair project with Ryan's artwork to Dark Horse at the time; such was my entirely misplaced devotion to a property I didn't own and didn't control. Very, very dumb of me, of course, but I made many poor choices back in 2000 and am continuing to make even more poor choices 24 years later.

I would very much like to write another SF comic someday (soon, if possible), but anything Dirty Pair-related seems unlikely at best.

NEXT TIME ON THIS HERE PATREON: No idea, TBH, but something should be coming up in the next M/W/F slot. Let's find out together, shall we?

UPDATE: Will almost certainly be something in the Distressed Damsels vein for the $5+ tiers, which I had originally planned to post today before realizing, "Wait, it's Friday!"

Comments

Yes to new SF stuff (and of course yes to more DP if that somehow became possible)

Burninator

Not really, though I only heard about the rejections indirectly; I get the impression that I was the only artist that Studio Nue would approve to work on an English-language comic under this (now long-expired) license.

Did you get any feedback on why this treatment was rejected? Or did they just hurl a brick through your window late at night with 'HAHA NO' written on it?

Dean Reilly

No shame wanting to continue working on a property that was paying the bills. But yes to an original SF series today!

Tim Price

I would absolutely love to see another SF comic from you with the level of cyberpunk/transhuman tech that was in Dirty Pair.

I think I still have some of Ryan’s color swatches we used to help out on the Phoenix mini series saved on a back up CD somewhere… I’m not a hoarder.. IM NOT!
