WORK STAGES on a recent(-ish) illustration, part 1!

So!

During the first week of June or thereabouts, I worked up a variant cover for the upcoming series Time Waits (by writers Chip Zdarsky and David Brothers and artist Marcus To), a creator-owned title to be published by the company DSTLRY. The illo was set up in an interesting format, in that it's a wraparound cover that doesn't use two separate comic original pages (as is normally the case for all the "wraparounds" I've done), but instead is formatted so the artist can lay a conventional comic-art board on its side and draw the illo on a single original page.

My initial rough, which was leaning into the high-contrast B&W riffing I enjoy so much:

I had considered a very different pose for the couple on the cover:

...but elected to revisit the pose from the first rough:

I pasted the roughs into the DSTLRY wraparound cover template to get editorial approval:

Next up, my (very light) pencils  for the illo, leveled up in Photoshop for legibility:

And the final inks, done with analog PITT Artist Pens and Sharpies and tweaked in Photoshop:

In fact, I have a lot more to say about these inks, and even a little to say about the firearms depicted, but no time to do so at present (as I grind away at the script for the new issue #1 of The Chaste and the Chained).  So, I'll save that commentary for sometime next month, when I hope to show a decent jpeg of the final colors (which I currently lack).

Note that you can see the colors for at least the front part of the cover here.

NEXT TIME ON THIS HERE PATREON: No idea, TBH, but something should be coming up in the next M/W/F slot. Let's find out together, shall we?

UPDATE: Ehh, will likely be something in the Distressed Damsels vein for the $5+ tiers, as the g-d month is fast running out and I still need to put up at least one more post featuring such content.

Unique and interesting art. To ask, what's up for this months $20 tier stuff? Coming this weekend, or on Monday the 1st?

Eric

In the 1970’s, for certain issues, Marvel had the artists draw 2 pages on a single sheet just as you've done. Although in the case of Marvel, these were just generic panel pages and not even double page spreads.
