I really enjoy the "new British Canon" series Trash Theory does, I always learn something new, for example Depeche Mode outselling Madonna and Prince in the 90's, that blew me away as both Prince and Madonna were huge. Violator is a classic album, I would get you to react to it as you probably could pick out how they have influenced other bands by listening to it . But I don't know if you would enjoy it as it does sound very 80's , It's also electronic and at times a l repetative, which I know you don't like. You're going to get some comments though as U2 aren't from the UK they are from Ireland 🙈 In terms of the biggest band to come out of the UK I think The beatles would be the biggest , but also the Who ,The Rolling Stones , Led Zepplin, Queen, Pink Floyd, Black Sabath, Iron Maiden were all really big. 80/90's band that were big, Dire straits, The Cure, and Tears for fears. In terms of more "modern" bands Radiohead, and Muse are pretty big, Coldplay are massive around the world but like Nickleback despite them being incredibly successful they are a band that people absolutely love to hate. Have you ever heard Marilyn Manson's version of Personal Jesus?
