I think that was deliberate to mark him out as different from the others. The "Black Sheep" if you will... the musical is really more about Judas than about Jesus - that's why it ends before the Resurrection - Judas never saw that.

Nice review as always but I've got one critique of the movie that you kinda missed or just kinda glossed over...Why in the name of all things sacred and holy is Judas Iscariot the definitive traitor of all of Western literature and theology if you ascribe to Christianity Black?! Unfortunate implications much? Good grief why did no one question this?

Its like that saying about making strong choices in art. I don't love Passion of the Christ. I'm not the intended audience,and I find resurrecting a dead language to be an irksome manifestation of the theme. However,Mel certainly knew what his take was and had real clarity about that vision.
