*googles Michael Drout* Awesome! Yes, there's a definite 'the creator is all and perfect and only the creator's opinion counts' thing in the backlash against fanfic.

This kind of reminds me, obliquely, of all the fuss of bother that happened when people finally started studying oral history and realized Homer wasn't actually a real person (probably). I think some of the backlash against fic might be tied in to that same need for the works that move us to have been created by some gifted genius that we can put on a pedestal. We want to hold these stories that mean so much to us inviolate and yet just the act of our absorbing them through our own perception (I really couldn't think of a better sentence here, I swear I tried) changes them. I look forward to knowing what reading/listening/watching you did for this episode. I liked Micheal Drout's lecture series on oral literature (an oxymoron that he explains in the series).
