Thank you for rocking the vote! Even though I'm bad at polls!
Added 2017-04-15 07:53:01 +0000 UTCHi again!
Thank you for voting! And for being very patient with me, considering that I have done this poll thing ALL WRONG.
In EVERY WAY.
Because first, I should have just asked for your favourite, not your least favourite. I thought that would be a useful way to determine if there was a name people really didn't think fit (and to be fair, 'Clever Girl' is now out of the running) BUUUUUTTT...
You know what I didn't think about before making the voting options?
Character limits.
Also the fact that people would keep suggesting names. XD
While it's not compulsory to have a Twitter handle to go along with the channel I do use Twitter as my primary social media thing, so that means there is a no-special-characters 15 character limit.
Which eliminates:
- Ursa's Major and Minor (18)
- Reverse the Molarity (18)
- Potato Alarm Clock (16)
- Gnosis for your Noggin (19) and
- Why Does That Happen? (Which, to be fair, is actually already a channel name, so we couldn't have had it anyway).
Which leaves us with
BrightSci,
Experiment House,
Quarky and Fun, and
Flask Me Anything from the original list.
I also liked Madam Curio, which was suggested last night after I put the poll up.
Of these, I'm taking out Flask Me Anything because of an unfortunate autocorrect tendency to 'Flash Me Anything' and that is...not what we're about around here, thank you Very Much. XD Plus, as another commenter pointed out, it does sound a bit like a channel where a hairy dude drinks alcohol with disgusting things in it.
Experiment House I rather like, but since it's not going to be an experiment-based channel, maybe as a subseries? (Puts name in pocket for later).
Madam Curio is cool, but Madam(e) Curi(e/o) misspellings perhaps abound. Also it's an Etsy shop. I like it though!
Quarky And Fun is another candidate for misspelling (obviously, as it's a pun) and it's quite long, but I do like it...grr, this is hard. It's also very specifically space-y. And the domain is uncertain.
BrightSci doesn't have a Twitter name available (it's been suspended?) but because it's short, something with an underscore would be OK. Not ideal, but OK. Also the .com domain is not currently available but, again, not currently a problem. But again, I do like it...
On occasions such as these, you can go with your gut or you can look for more data.
DATA TIME
These things are better when making a YouTube channel:
- shorter names: (min 6 characters though!)
- contains keywords
- gives an accurate representation of content
- no numbers
- memorable (alliterative/play on words/rhyme/rhythmical)
With these things in mind, and given that I want people to know that it's a sciencey/techy channel right off the bat:
- Madam Curio is probably too vague, because, again, if you can make an Etsy shop of it it's probably not very sciencey.
- Quarky and Fun is pretty good, but quite long...and most importantly, probably too specific.
Names are hard.
With that in mind, (and with apologies to the 5 people who weren't fans of it) I think I'm going to go with...
BrightSci.
It's short, it has Sci in it and so says 'science channel', it's a play on words (look on the bright side!), and yes, I now have Mr. Brightside in my head, but hey, memorable! And I like it, which is also important.
OH, AND I've now thought of a branding hook that relates:
Bright.
Science.
Lightbulbs. *idea lightbulb ping*
But more on branding and colours and logos in the next post. If you'd like there to be one.
(Which is a short way of saying: is this in any way interesting to you? Do you like hearing about the nitty-gritty process stuff or are you like, 'hey, Jill, PLEASE go back to posting Star Wars videos, we've had it up to here with your YouTube nonsense!')

2017-04-15 12:29:12 +0000 UTCI like the name and I think it's very interesting to peek behind the curtain. And if you need to talk chemistry or biochemistry, you can always e-mail me. I might be able to answer your questions.

2017-04-15 10:56:41 +0000 UTCI think BrightSci will do the trick, I wanna watch your science videos.
2017-04-15 08:50:10 +0000 UTCI was one of the ones who voted against the name and I will tell you why...it reminded me too much of SciShow. I personally feel you don't want to remind people of another channel which is doing the same thing as you, especially since they have been around longer, have bigger names and bigger budgets. Sure you will be doing your own thing but I just felt it might be a little too similar which at worst you may be accused of copying them. Again just my opinion...now that I have had time to think on it what about "Sigh-ence". It works on the pun level :-P lol
2017-04-15 08:29:47 +0000 UTCYay! BrightSci was my fav. It's interesting to see all the behind the scenes stuff. I've thought about starting a YouTube channel/show but never really thought about what I'd call it. So this process was very enlightening. : )
