Got a name, now I just need...everything else.

Well all right! We've got ourselves a channel name! So I have gone ahead and got myself a Tumblr , Twitter (well, @Bright_Sci, not ideal but there we go), and of course, YouTube channel in that name! You may notice there's nothing on there yet. FEAR NOT.Well now what?

BRANDING.

I have some idea of the first few videos that are going on the channel:

- Raspberry Pi vlog (from VidConEU)

- baking soda will break your hair video

- how the British dropped their suicide rate by a third in the 60s (without even trying)

- Lupron (loosely based on my blog post about it)

So it's very general science/tech content, there's no really specific niche here. So far, anyway.

Because of that, we're going to keep it relatively simple on the branding front:

Choose a font

Choose a colour

Maybe do a little tweaking.

I had this idea about lightbulbs, because...bright, and also sciencey, and also ideas.

But, you know, nothing too fancy. I am not up for fancy. In addition to the colour/font combo we need a logo for the watermark and a photo for the channel page.

But first things first:

FONT AND COLOUR

I went to a really useful workshop on branding at VidCon, where Charli Prangley (a graphic designer) ran us through the basics.

Font and logo, she said, start there and don't worry too much about the rest for now.

I'm going to cheat a little, because I got some business cards for VidCon and I really liked the colours. So I'm going to go for something pretty similar. Green background, white or yellow text.

Fonts? I searched for free for commercial use fonts and found a whole bunch, pictured above!

I asked the opinion of Josh, who I've worked with before and who does great work (and a mean cosplay too; hi, Josh!) and he said hey, white is better than yellow, it'll be more readable, and the third font is very after-school special. But the second one is really nice.

I said I was thinking of using a font that had dots on the 'i's and replacing them with a lightbulb.

He said GIMME A SEC I WILL TRY A THING, because he's good like that.

And the result was...pretty sweet.

(You'll have to wait until next time for that, Patreon only allows one image per post.)

You should call your post "experiment house". lol ok nevermind. Aw.~tips hat~

Maybe I want you mad XD Seriously though, that's a really useful thing to know. The link suggests a contrast ratio of 3:1 for text greater than size 18. Current font size is...about 200, so that's cool. I think I'm going to do a post about this! (Definitely true white for the text, then!)

On colour contrast: part of a project I am doing for serious work-related things is to try and update a booklet and make it more accessible to people with a vision impairment. One of the things I discovered was the importance of colour contrast and I found this tool from Vision Australia which is a web-based piece of software that allows you to select foreground and background of anything on your screen with an eye-dropper, and tell you if and how well it'd be seen by someone with a vision impairment. https://www.visionaustralia.org/business-and-professionals/digital-access-consulting/resources/tools-to-download/colour-contrast-analyser It also tells you the Hex value, so you can actually then search and find the corresponding RGB value of a colour, if you like something and wanna go: "hey, how do I find that colour?"The cyan-y-green colour background and the yellow or the white would both probably be unreadable to a person with a vision impairment, which also means that it's probably harder to read for someone without one, compared to something with greater contrast. I mean it looks pretty, but also, anything in the spectrum of Cyan is a false friend; I've been staring at a colour like that for a long time, and it will drive you mad. Solomon out.
