The Last Airbender Poll

Hello lovely Patrons, I am in need of your help. I have just finished a draft of a script about The Last Airbender (I know, I know, it was £1.00 in the charity shop) and the problems with the combat magic therein. I am, however, finding myself with TOO MANY OTHER TOPICS that I could talk to you about. So...do any of these sound good? (Feel free to tick as many as are applicable)

You could make two episodes. Just saying.

Alas, I am unfamiliar with this, outside of your reviews. All the catagories are good ones, but it's nice how you find something positive and encouraging to focus on. As I've said before, one need not be familiar with the source material while watching your videos to take away something positive to apply to life. I voted for the lack of contractions just because that seemed like something that would be incredibly distracting to hear throughout a film. That and I love linguistics, grammar, syntax, rhetoric, etc.

The trouble with combat magic on film is letting the audience know what is going on. In Trudi Canavan's The Black Magician Trilogy the top users do not yell out spells or even move their hands, one simple must 'read' your opponent's magic and counter it the best that you can; try to put that on film. The usual recourse is the "Cliffs of Insanity' type fight where you get a running commentary on the fight by, at least, one of the combatants. People know, or think they know, what a gun or sword fight should look like, with magic you have create a system that both entertains the audience and allows them to follow the fight.

I voted for the dialogue option but really all of these topics sound interesting and would love to see your thoughts. Most video's on this movie I've seen focus on just how it's a bad adaptation (which it totally still is).

Helen Ellison

I trust your decisions around this. I can honestly say I had not been disappointed in any video you've made since becoming a Patron. As for length, I just watched Folding Ideas's feature-length video on Flat Earthers. Bring it on :)

Good to know :) This video has ended up more of a discussion on combat magic systems and how you make them intuitive (or not, or sometimes intuitive and sometimes not, as is the case in TLA) but I do have a bit at the end where I talk about a scene I liked and how I thought it succeeded. Also I hope you like long videos as this one is going to be a monster, it's six whole pages without any bonus content added in yet o.0

While I think the movie deserves all the scorn it's received, I'd be interested in a "what I think this fight was meant to say, and how does it succeed or fail?" That's something you uniquely bring to the conversation.

Juan Borla

I feel that the poor movie has been kicked by everyone, so saying something positive would be nice.
