Discord

What do people think about having a Discord server as a place to chat and...do...stuff...I mainly use Discord for D&D so I'm interested if people like it as a place to gather.

I really have no knowledge of what Discord is (outside of the 'Conversations with the Ex' context)

I have trouble keeping up with discord bc there can be So Much, so if there is a discord for patrons in the future i'd really appreciate if there could be some level of cross-posting about events and such here

if it is Patreon members only it would be a lot easier to manage if it is open to everyone, hopefully there would be discord Patreon member areas where we could retreat to...

Discord is basicly just a proprietary IRC server with a few extra bells and whistles, i have used IRC since the late 90's and Discord for just over a year, i do agree the number of servers can get unmanagable

Aussiefeld

Yes, Patron only; from what I have been told (warned-off actually) it that Discord can be quite nasty.

Discord is a decent messenger, but I'm not a fan of large conversations on it in realtime. Call me old school, but I prefer the slower pace of a forum to a chat. I really only use it to communicate with a few friends and to do voice chat for D&D. So, make a Discord server if you want to and if enough people want to participate. :)

You could contact Mathew Buck - he has his own Discord and you could probably copy his rules pretty much verbatim.

You get a Discord! And you get a Discord! Everybody gets a Discord! :D (Good point)

Jill Bearup

Very useful, thank you. (definitely Patron-only, or Patrons-and-nice-people-I-like-and-know, because a general server just seems like asking for trouble)

Jill Bearup

Absolutely. You also need to set rules. Nothing NSFW, no politics, no religion, nothing illegal (like uploading copyrighted material), and everyone be nice and civil.

Anders

Discord IS great, but I'm starting to wonder if the "I have a Discord, and you have a Discord, and all God's chilluns gots Discords" thing is going to collapse under its own weight at some point. Just how many servers am I actually going to join and stick with, never mind running one of my own, never mind managing notification settings for, never mind scrolling through in the Discord client trying to find the right one? Maybe it gets easier with practice, I dunno. (Also seconding the "set expectations, enforce boundaries" advice above.)

I have Discord for a number of Patreons, plus a variety of other things, and it's fun! So I would be in favour! :-)

I tend to not be able to keep up with discord, but go for it. Or you could try to get some channels in an existing server (to have a mod or at least share the work and some other communities to intertwine) ... like there were some good people on the site that shall not be named. Either way it might take some of your time, but could good for "engagement".

^This. I would also set the expectations for your level of interaction with that Discord early and explicitly. People coming to it will probably have built in expectations from other communities they're a part of, so just having some basic "I, Jill Bearup, will check in on you crazy consumers about once a fortnight for about an hour" or something in that vein to set expectations will stay a lot of questions and potential misunderstandings about people expecting kinds and levels of creator engagement.

I currently only use Discord for Yuri On Ice fan communities but would be very happy to have a wider range of interests available to discuss

Abi & Pete

I never use it so no interest to me.

Neil Docherty

Will this be a Patreon-only Discord or one for general use? One for general use will probably need to be moderated, so there's that to think about as well.

Anders

I've met some lovely people through Discord communities (including most of the people I D&D with). Could be a really nice way to connect all us people who like Jill Bearup-y things. I'd be up for it!
