Have a Shang Chi review!

I went to a cinema! I saw a movie! It was a pretty good movie and I liked it! Boy, it's been a while since I did a relatively contemporaneous movie review. It's nice.

Mostly, gotta say, loved the fights. It is good to be able to see stuff, especially when it's so well conceived and nicely executed.

I just have one question: where did Shang Chi's dad find an iron and a washing machine in the middle of an enchanted forest? Anyone?

Based on the brief clip of the forest fight I would recommend "House of Flying Daggers" for anyone wanting more highly saturated, colour themed fights in beautiful natural locations. Also romance and martial arts and since we're talking cinema in the Hong-Kong lineage, melodrama.

Matthew Hambley

One thing... I'd replace the term "Marvel movie" with "comic-based movie". Specific mention of Marvell brings up these really stupid viral "Marvel vs DC Comics" debates, which I want to very cruelly mock here, but won't. Just avoid giving these people ammo. And stop giving either franchise free advertising by mentioning them. They are comic book franchises, nothing more.

I was undecided about seeing this movie in theater, then found out Michelle Yeoh was in it, it became a must see; no regrets, decent movie.

Anthony Wentworth

Great point about the context required for flirty fights to really hit home.

Duke Mitchell

I've been looking forward to this one! I was hoping to see it in theatres but because of the uptick around here I'm going to wait till it's on Disney+. I recently heard that the main villian? actress learned martial arts for this movie.

Helen Ellison

I used to love Hotel California, but now if I never hear it again, I'm ok.... having heard it sooooo many times - my fault in the beginning. I don't hate it, it has just lost its luster.

I worked in classic rock radio for 14 years. You can't come out of that experience without hating SOMEthing. (My first boss/mentor hated Aqualung, deeply and passionately hated it.)

Karel P Kerezman

It was written in 1976. The Hotel California is nearly 50 years old. What else do you hate? The Hully Gully? Al Jolson songs? Do you share your musical tastes in your old age home?

Chris Daniels

I'm guessing the iron and washing machine thing is just a bit of silliness, but also ... When you live in a land with 3500+ years of noncontinuous inhabitation, junk shows up in strange places.

Chris Daniels

I don't know what kind of enchanted forests you've been frequenting...

Jim Sanderson

"Hotel California"? Seriously? I hate that song. Ugh. (But I'm still going to watch this movie... once I'm able to, which means whenever it lands on D+.)

How many rapiers out of five?

I haven't seen it yet, and not sure when I will, hopefully soon. Also looking forward to Spider-Man. Problem is there isn't a Cinema close to me that is open (I'm on a bicycle and just discovered 2 broken spokes in the rear wheel)... So I'll have to wait to watch this.
