Funny Story - Broken Cables

So here's something funny for you, but not for me.

(Well, it shouldn't for you either, if you enjoy my Drawings?)

The cable for my drawing Tablet broke and I can't use it now. It broke like...half a week ago. So, first impulse was to Panic, then look where I can find a new one, and then panic again looking at the 50€ price it would cost me.

But let's rewind a little before I get to the part where I explain why I still have no cable.

Why did the cable break? Honestly I haven't noticed it up until a week ago where it had gotten considerably harder to plug the thing in. I've started to get this message popup, that a device couldn't be detected. Normally, plugging in the cable again would solve the problem and I guessed, that the problem came up due to my tablet getting older. Turns out, that wasn't the full reason for it.

As a left handed person, I have to use the Drawing Tablet in left handed mode in which I flip the thing and the Input for the cable goes from the right side to the left. Now, plugging the cable in from the left leads to it being bend a bit more than I would like and over those last years, the cable must have endured that "pain" until finally giving up on me.

Now back to the present. I knew that I'd need that cable as fast as possible. Even though I have a Drawing for the coming monday, I don't want to fall behind that much. The fastest way would be using Amazon. But there would still be a problem, because even though Amazon is fast, the Postal service around here isn't. Quite the contrary, actually. I remember cases where they wouldn't even show up with your stuff and just send it to a branch office while pretending the package has been delivered just for you to one week later get a message, that you need to pick it up 500km away from home.

I honestly didn't want this to happen, so I've searched for a more efficient and safe way. Amazon seems to have this "New" technology called "Amazon Hub" where the packages get delivered to this "Safe" in your vicinity where you can easily pick it up. I don't know how new this actually is, I just haven't heard from it before.

Seems great, I thought. ordered on wednesday morning, it told me, with Amazon prime the package should be there in one day at the latest, and indeed, on the same day, late evening, I got a notification that the cable had been delivered to that hub. Not that far away too, like 5 minutes on foot at most.

It was raining heavily at that time, so I guessed I should either wait until the rain stopped, or just wait until tomorrow, wouldn't want to get the thing wet. Besides that, I'm actually allergic to water, but I guess that's a different story.

The next day came and I went to that "Hub". First time using this thing, I had to remember the procedure to open those lockers. It came as no surprise to me, that I got unsettled after trying it multiple times without it working. "What did I do wrong?"

"Has an error occurred?"

In the country I live in, there's that prevalent Meme. Translated it means "The Internet is Uncharted Territory for us", and only just an hour later, I would be reminded of that meme that started maybe like 10-15 years ago.

After some calls and some headaches and near panic attacks later, I learned that the Hub broke and can't be accessed anymore. The Cause isn't completely known until now, but it's heavily suggested that the rain the day before destroyed the thing somehow. My cable sits there, literally just 5 minutes away from here, but with no way to access it.

I've gotten the notice from Amazon, that the money would be refunded and the order canceled. Furthermore, I would not be able to use the Amazon Hub feature until the actual Hub would be repaired which could take months from now. Serioulsy, where I live, Construction sites will randomly appear and from then on will remain there until you forgot they were building something there and just think of it like "belonging to the cityscape".

After some more talks with different Mail departments, there will be a different Department now delivering the Cable hopefully at the start of next week.

At least, I have a Drawing ready for Monday, but after experiences like this, I wonder if someone or something just really likes to see me suffer. We'll see when I buy a new Drawing tablet at the end of this year because the one I have really has been used quite a lot especially in the last year, but also those years before.

On that note, do some of you use Drawing Tablets? How often, and how long do those last until you need a new one? It's my first Tablet and I think I've had it for about 3.5 years now.

Well, at least I got to write a "Funny Story" out of it, so there's some value.

お絵かきタブレットのケーブルが壊れてしまって、使えなくなってしまったんです。壊れたのは半週ほど前です。それで、最初の衝動はパニックになり、次に新しいものがどこにあるか探し、そして50ユーロという値段を見てまたパニックになりました。

しかし、なぜまだケーブルがないのか、その理由を説明する前に少し巻き戻してみましょう。

なぜケーブルが断線したのか？正直なところ、1週間前までは気づかなかったのですが、プラグを差し込むのがかなり難しくなってきたんです。デバイスを検出できないというメッセージがポップアップで表示されるようになったんです。通常、ケーブルをもう一度差し込めば問題は解決するので、タブレットが古くなったことが原因で問題が発生したのだろうと推測していました。しかし、それが原因ではないことがわかりました。

左利きの私は、ドローイングタブレットを左利きモードで使用しなければなりません。つまり、タブレットを反転させ、ケーブルの入力口を右側から左側にします。そのため、左からケーブルを差し込むと、ケーブルが思いのほか曲がってしまい、この数年間、ケーブルはその「痛み」に耐え、ついに私を見放したのです。

さて、話を現在に戻します。やはり、あのケーブルは一刻も早く必要だ。来週の月曜日にはDrawingがあるとはいえ、そんなに遅れをとりたくない。一番手っ取り早いのは、アマゾンを利用することだろう。しかし、アマゾンは速くても、この辺りの郵便サービスは速くないからだ。その逆です。荷物を持っても来ず、配達されたことにして支店に送り、1週間後に「500km離れた場所まで取りに来てください」というメッセージが届くということもありましたね。

正直なところ、このような事態は避けたいので、より効率的で安全な方法を探しました。Amazonは「Amazon Hub」と呼ばれる「新しい」技術を持っているようで、荷物は近くの「金庫」に届けられ、簡単に受け取ることができるようです。実際にどの程度新しいものなのかは分かりませんが、今まで聞いたことがないものでした。

水曜日の朝に注文すると、Amazonプライムなら遅くとも1日で届くと言われ、その日の夜遅くに、ケーブルがそのハブに届いたという通知を受け取りました。距離もそんなに遠くなく、せいぜい徒歩5分くらいです。

その時、大雨が降っていたので、雨が止むまで待つか、明日まで待つか、濡らしたくないんだろうなと思いました。それに、僕は実は水アレルギーなのだが、それはまた別の話だろう。

翌日、私はその「ハブ」に行ってみた。初めて使うので、ロッカーを開ける手順を覚えておかなければならなかった。何度やってもうまくいかず、不安になったのも無理はない。"何がいけなかったのだろう？"

"エラーが起きたのか？"

私が住んでいる国では、「ミーム」という言葉が流行っています。訳すと「インターネットは我々にとって未知の領域だ」という意味だが、わずか1時間後に、10～15年前に始まったこのミームを思い出すことになる。

その後、何度か電話をして、頭痛やパニック発作が起きそうになった後、ハブが壊れてアクセスできなくなったことを知りました。原因はまだ完全にはわかっていませんが、前日の雨でハブを壊してしまったという説が濃厚です。私のケーブルは、文字通りここから5分のところにあるのだが、アクセスする方法がない。

Amazonから、代金は返金され、注文はキャンセルされるとの通知を受けました。さらに、実際のハブが修理されるまで、Amazon Hubの機能を使うことができず、数ヶ月かかるかもしれないとのことでした。私の住んでいるところでは、工事現場がランダムに現れ、それ以降、工事をしていることを忘れるほどそこに残り、「街並みの一部」のように思ってしまうのです。

メール便の部署と相談した結果、来週の初めには別の部署がケーブルを配達することになりそうです。

一応、月曜日には絵が描けるようになっているのですが、こういう経験をすると、誰かが、あるいは何かが、私が苦しむのを見るのが好きなだけなのではないかと思ってしまいます。年末に新しいドローイングタブレットを購入するときに見てみよう。今持っているタブレットは、特にここ1年、あるいはその前の年にかなり使い込んだものだからだ。

ところで、皆さんの中には、ドローイングタブレットを使用している方はいらっしゃいますか？また、新しいタブレットが必要になるまで、どれくらいの頻度で、どれくらいの期間使うのでしょうか？私のタブレットは初めてで、もう3年半くらい使っていると思います。

まあ、少なくとも「面白い話」を書くことができたので、それなりの価値はあると思います。
