Improvement and Discontentment (And why Artificial Intelligence will kill us all *Clickbait*)

Big words for such small meaning. But what does the title mean?

It's a feeling most artists have, I guess. You're improving, so why are you feeling down? It's that feeling the closer you get to your goal, the more you'll realize that you're actually really far away because your experience enhances your judgment of how far you're really away from your goal. In some cases, not only that, but your goal also changes and you feel like you're back at the beginning.

I want to give a Quick analysis of my "Artistic Career" over the last years, maybe it helps other artists?

As an Artist, I'm entirely self-taught. This means, I've never had any guidance and had to teach myself. But being your own teacher sucks, because a bad teacher can only create bad students. I wonder how far I would've been if I had a proper teacher, but then again, I was only good at school if I learned for myself, without a teacher? Maybe I've only had bad teachers, but I digress.

Being my own teacher, I advised myself over the last 2 years to prioritise speed, to not only increase the amount of drawings I can finish, but also get faster to the next one, so I can learn faster. It worked. While improving the overall Quality of my Art compared to 2 years ago, I've gotten significantly faster and forcing myself to post at least 2 times a week over the last half year helped building up a discipline.

I would be lying of course if I said, that was all on me though. Your support also kept me motivated. To be honest, that factor played a big role in my overall improvement.

So, I Improved. Am I happy now?

Of course not. Or maybe, yes. But I'm not contend. If I'm contend, I'm not improving, the dilemma of an Artist, I guess. I am extremely happy to be able to share my Art though and I hope I don't sound like I'm complaining, I'm just analyzing myself objectively.

If I pushed myself even further, I think I could upload 3 or 4 times a week, but I don't think that will happen. I'd rather start focusing more on quality at that point, 2 times a week should be completely fine.

On the topic of Improvement and Advancement, what about A.I. Art?

I think this has been discussed to death already, so I don't think I can add too much to this topic, but I want to share my personal experience and thoughts about this.

I always thought Artificial intelligence is really exciting, so I always kept an eye on it. And I've also tried NovelAI's Art Generation, as I'm a long time Fan of their Text A.I.

Well, it definitely takes many years of experience and talent, and hard work and so much other things to "draw" as good as the A.I. can do in about 20 seconds. As an robotics freak, It's really fascinating and I love how advanced it is already. As an Artist, this is...interesting. At this point, it's like giving a request to the A.I., but it's your own imagination and skill to give out promts and fine tune the results that leads to a good picture. It's Art, but as a completely different skill and process, but the results mimic the drawing of a human Artist.

I've seen some people saying that this A.I. advancement and the controversy around it is similar to back when digital Art was ostracized by analog artists and I have to disagree. While there are similarities, the process is ultimately the same for most digital artists, there are just more tools available. But in A.I. Art, like I've mentioned before, the one giving the Request to the A.I. is actually the "Artist", the A.I. just executes the order.

I'm certain, A.I. art will not replace human artists, but will discourage many new and inexperienced artists. The pressure to improve to get to a certain level where your art is at least acceptable against A.I. Art will be very high. Instead of replacing human Artists, this advancement will more likely lead less new artists, because of this pressure, but also because potential artists will learn to use A.I. instead of more "traditional" means to create Art.

Where this advancement will really shine is in some kind of hybrid use between human artists and the A.I, using it as some kind of companion piece to support the creation of original ideas, composition or even helping in spots where the artist lacks.

The Anime and Manga industry, where people are severely overworked could actually profit the most out of this, not to replace the artists, but help in spots and things that just take too much time. Instead of a Mangaka having 5 assistants, they could have 5 assistants and 1 A.I. assistant, reducing the workload of the artists without impacting the "Art" behind the finished product.

I don't know if these are controversial takes, but I like to think that advancement can always be used to create good things. This is why we improve as individuals as well as a Society. And because I think, a good artist will never be contend, we will never stop improving.

小さな意味なのに大きな言葉。でも、このタイトルにはどんな意味があるのでしょう？

多くのアーティストが抱く感情だと思うんです。上達しているのに、なんで落ち込んでいるんだ？それは、目標に近づけば近づくほど、実は本当に遠いということを実感することで、自分の経験が目標との距離感を判断する材料になるからです。そればかりか、目標が変化して、最初に戻ったように感じる場合もあります。

この数年間の私の「芸術家としてのキャリア」を簡単に分析してみたいと思います。

アーティストとして、私は完全に独学で学びました。つまり、指導を受けたことがなく、自分で教えなければならなかったのです。しかし、自分の先生であることは最悪です。悪い先生は、悪い生徒しか作らないからです。もし、ちゃんとした先生がいたら、私はどこまでいけたのだろうと思うのですが、でも、先生がいなくても、自分で勉強していれば、学校の成績は良かったのでしょうか。私は悪い先生しかいなかったのかもしれませんが、話がそれましたね。

私は自分の先生として、この2年間、スピードを優先するよう自分に助言しました。完成できる絵の量を増やすだけでなく、次の絵へのスピードを上げ、より早く学べるようにするためです。それが功を奏しました。2年前と比べると、絵の全体的なクオリティが上がる一方で、スピードも格段に上がり、この半年間は週に2回以上投稿することを自分に強いたことで、規律を身につけることができました。

もちろん、それがすべて自分の力だと言えば嘘になりますが。また、皆さんの応援が私のモチベーションを保ってくれました。正直なところ、このことが私の進歩に大きく影響しています。

だから、改善したんだ。私は今、幸せですか？

もちろん、そんなことはない。あるいは、そうかもしれない。でも、私は争うつもりはないんです。もし私が争っているならば、私は向上していないことになります。でも、自分のアートを共有できるのはとても幸せなことだし、文句を言っているように聞こえなければいいのですが、ただ自分を客観的に分析しているだけなんです。

もっと自分を追い込めば、週に3、4回アップロードできると思うのですが、それは無理でしょう。それよりもクオリティを重視したいので、週2回で全然大丈夫です。

改善・前進ということでは、A.I.アートはどうでしょうか。

この話題はすでに死ぬほど議論されていると思うので、あまり多くのことを付け加えられるとは思いませんが、私の個人的な経験と考えをお話ししたいと思います。

私は、人工知能は本当にエキサイティングだと思っていて、いつも注目していました。NovelAIのText A.I.のファンなので、Art Generationも試しました。

20秒程度でA.I.並みの「絵」を描くには、長年の経験と才能、努力など様々なものが必要なのは確かです。ロボット工学のフリークとしては、本当に魅力的で、すでに進化しているところが大好きです。アーティストとしては、これは...面白いですね。現時点では、AIにリクエストを出すようなものですが、プロンプトを出してその結果を微調整するのは、自分の想像力とスキルで、いい絵につながります。アートといっても、全く別の技術、プロセスですが、結果は人間のアーティストの絵を模倣しているのです。

このA.I.の進化とそれをめぐる論争は、デジタルアートがアナログアーティストから排斥された時代に似ていると言う人がいますが、私はそうは思いませんね。類似点はありますが、ほとんどのデジタルアーティストにとって、最終的には同じプロセスであり、利用できるツールが増えただけなのです。しかし、A.I.アートでは、前にも述べたように、A.I.にリクエストを出すのは実は「アーティスト」であり、A.I.はそのオーダーを実行するだけなのです。

A.I.アートは人間のアーティストに取って代わるものではなく、多くの新しいアーティストや経験の浅いアーティストを落胆させるものだと確信しています。A.I.アートを相手に、少なくとも自分のアートが通用するレベルにまで向上しなければならないというプレッシャーは、非常に大きなものになるでしょう。人間のアーティストに取って代わるのではなく、この進歩によって、新しいアーティストが減る可能性が高くなります。このプレッシャーのせいで、潜在的なアーティストは、より「伝統的な」手段ではなく、AIを使ってアートを作ることを学ぶからです。

この進歩が本当に輝くのは、人間のアーティストとA.I.のハイブリッドな使い方で、オリジナルのアイデアや構成の創造をサポートするコンパニオンピースとして、あるいはアーティストに欠けている部分を手助けするような使い方でしょう。

アニメやマンガの業界は、人が酷使されているので、これを利用すれば、アーティストの代わりになるのではなく、時間がかかりすぎるところを助けてくれるようになります。マンガ家が5人のアシスタントを抱える代わりに、5人のアシスタントと1人のAIアシスタントを抱えることができ、完成品の背後にある「芸術」に影響を与えることなく、アーティストの作業負荷を軽減することができるのです。

このような考え方は賛否両論あるかもしれませんが、私は、進歩は常に良いものを生み出すために使われると考えたいのです。だからこそ、私たちは個人として、また社会として向上していくことができるのです。そして、私は、優れた芸術家は決して争うことはなく、私たちは決して進歩を止めることはないだろうと考えています。
