Being an experienced blacksmith, I might suggest putting some slight faceted elements on the rivet heads, called a rosebud rivet, and have a tapered overlap where the band ends meet. Being an very experienced wood worker, I would suggest muting the wood grain slightly and if the base was intended to have an inverse barrel style construction via use of the bands a bit of a curvature to the lumber would be appropriate.
