Magnets, help me, help you

So as you know im working on the black knight.. and theres an.. expectation for magnetic limbs, and ive never worked with them so have no idea what to do.

What tolerences are they? You drilling your own holes?

This would be very helpful for me at least!

And if people don’t want to use magnets then they’ll just need to print a 3x4mm peg and glue them together. If you’re feeling generous you could even provide one with the file for those with zero modelling knowledge.

You can pick some up here for ~£5 if you want to try some test prints.

first4magnets™ F332-N35-50 Magnet Expert 3mm dia x 2mm thick N35 Neodymium Magnet - 0.21kg Pull ( Pack of 50 ) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00TACKU0O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_CF2N04MN86SP2YRCM93E

I use 3x2mm neodymium magnets in my own designs a lot. They’ll be more than strong enough for a mini (as long as the model’s arms are thick enough for a 3mm hole). I normally allow for a 0.1mm tolerance as well, so I would make the holes 3.1x2.1mm. That’ll be more than enough.

Thanks guys helpful stuff

3mm dia 2mm thick is what I’ve used for 32mm scale models before. Couldn’t tell you the size of the hold that had been made but the magnet has some ‘wiggle’ and the glue held it in place rather than being a tight fit

I haven’t used magnets before except in dice boxes, for those some cylindrical holes give a place for the magnet to go. So maybe two versions of the model, one keyed, one with small indents at the connection points. Looking forward to printing this one!

With neodymium magnets, just a hole to place and glue the magnet in would be enough. They are very strong, and when set magnet to magnet they will hold together. Size wise 5mm diameter by 2mm thick would be more than enough could also do 3mm x 2mm. A hole at each side of connecting aka arm to shoulder etc. Magnet at each side so solid strong connection.

I've never used magnets before. But for this model I am willing to learn. I love that you are trying to make magnets an option.

Alternative is 4 different models haha

I punch holes for the magnets i am using in my slicer (lychee) I personally would prefer flat connection points. No keys. But people that want to glue them and not use magnets might appreciate keys. So....I'm super helpful once again ^^
