Patreon - No Change in Fees
Added 2017-12-14 01:30:39 +0000 UTCSo, recently, Patreon announced they were going to be deploying a change to their payment structure that would move the cost of fees from patrons off to creators. Even more recently (like today), they decided to repeal this after a fairly overwhelming negative response.
I don't want to write out all my personal opinions, but I'm glad they decided to not go forward with the payment change. The fact that they posted this blog, apologized, and decided to take some time to find another way, gives me a lot of faith for the platform.

Agreed. This was the first time in a great while I could recall a company changing it's plans based on customer feedback. Usually the response is more, "get used to it".

2017-12-14 04:57:37 +0000 UTCThe concept was nice, but the way they were instituting the fees were causing havoc to patrons of 1 and 2 dollar tiers. The flat rate of 35 cents per transaction isn't so bad if you're paying 10 dollars, but if you're paying 1 dollar and on a budget, that's a huge increase, particularly if you pledge to a lot of people. Additionally, they planned to change something with the way things were aggregated for per creation creators, I think. I don't think their intentions were incorrect, but patrons of low tiers we're starting to back out of supporting some of their creators because the 30-odd percent cost increase was too much. Personally, I just think that at this point, they're stuck. Whatever payment model they have is what they've got, and there are other, far more pressing, issues that they could spend their time on. :)

2017-12-14 02:27:41 +0000 UTCI don’t quite see how the change was a bad thing necessarily. Everything I had read indicated that the processing fees are technically incurred by the patron, so it should be they who pays that fee instead of the creator. I have also heard that having the donor pay the processing fees is how several other crowdfunding sites work as well. Is there something I am just not quite understanding here?
