Firstly, there is a demon cited in the Liber incantationum, exorcismorum et fascinationum variarum named Tuvries, who has a nearly identical description, with the addition that he can cross large bodies of water quickly.
From wikipedia:
“Kimaris, as Cimeries, is also found on Anton LaVey's list of infernal names. Aleister Crowley, in 777, gives Kimaris the Hebrew spelling KYMAVR and attributes him to the four of disks and the third decan of Capricorn by night. KYMAVR may allude to "Khem-our" (black light), a form of Horus mentioned in Blavatsky's Secret Doctrine. In Sepher Sephiroth, he is listed as KYTzAVR, with a gematria of 327, although KYMAVR=277.
In Harleian Ms. 6482, entitled "The Rosie Crucian Secrets", Thomas Rudd lists Cimeries as the 26th spirit made use of by King Solomon. He also attributes an angel Cimeriel to one of Dee's Enochian Ensigns of Creation, the tablet of 24 mansions. The earliest mention of Chamariel is in Rossi's Gnostic tractate. It is probable that the earliest mention of Kimaris is also Coptic, found in the London oriental mss 6796 where the name "Akathama Chamaris" appears. In this text, the entity in question does not appear to be evil; rather, he is addressed as a godlike helping spirit.”
I am not going to treat these as official citations, but I feel they are worth discussion. LaVey messing about with Hebrew should be discarded in its entirety. Additionally, the Blavatsky citation seems tenuous at best. Rudds work is generally more academic, but the Enochian conception of angels and demons is different enough that I would consider them separate from what I wish to explore here. On the topic of the earliest mention of the name Kimaris being Coptic, the name “Akathama Chamaris” appears to be untranslatable at the time. I do not have access to either the original nor a translated copy of London Or 6796 and scholarly work on the coptic papyri is scant to say the least, but given how Coptic manuscripts oten feature slight variations of common names, I have some suspicions as to the origins.
The name is strikingly similar to the Cimmerians, a nomadic indo-european people mentioned in 8th century Assyrian records who were likely displaced and forced to leave their homeland by the rising Scythian empire.
Additionally, A people named Kimmerioi is described in Homer's Odyssey, as living beyond the Oceanus, in a land of fog and darkness, at the edge of the world and the entrance of Hades where they dwell in eternal darkness. Evocative.
Given the origins of the names of many demons can be found in slight variations of “pagan” peoples and deities, I believe it is safe to say that the name Kimaris is derived from either the Cimmerian people or one of their deities.
Given the demons association with physical speed and eloquent persuasion, I would speculate they act in some form of espionage.
