54 - DECARABIA

54 - Decarabia aka Carabia, Decarbia - Appears in Book of Incantations, The Discoverie of Witchcraft, Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, and The Lesser Key of Solomon

FROM PSEUDOMONARCHIA

Decarabia or Carabia, he commeth like a * and knoweth the force of herbes and pretious stones, and maketh all birds flie before the exorcist, and to tarrie with him, as though they were tame, and that they shall drinke and sing, as their maner is, and hath thirtie legions.

FROM THE LESSER KEY

The Sixty-ninth Spirit is Decarabia. He appeareth in the Form of a Star in a Pentacle, at first; but after, at the command of the Exorcist, he putteth on the image of a Man. His Office is to discover the Virtues of Birds and Precious Stones, and to make the Similitude of all kinds of Birds to fly before the Exorcist, singing and drinking as natural Birds do. He governeth 30 Legions of Spirits, being himself a Great Marquis. And this is his Seal, which is to be worn, etc.

FROM THE DICTIONNAIRE INFERNAL

Carabia or Decarabia, is a little known demon, even though he wields great power in the dark empire. He is King of a part of Hell and Count  of another sizable province. He shows himself, like Buyer, under the appearance of a five-pointed star. He knows the virtues of plants and precious gems ; he rules over birds, which he makes docile. Thirty legions are under his command.

Appearance: A pentagram, but takes human shape

Subrace: Unknown

Abilities: Haruspicy, Precious Stones

Legions: 30

Rank: Marquis

Notes:

It should be noted that Carabia is the name of a Macedonian town mentioned by Ptolemy, its modern location is unknown. The idea of a demon existing as a symbol is fascinating to me. Many illustrations portray this demon as flesh contorted into the shape of a pentagram but I have reason to believe that misses the point.

The oldest text here doesn’t say “pentagram”, Weyer draws a literal pentagram onto the page. I speculate that Decarabia can somehow manifest as a two dimensional image, or is somehow able to impart a small piece of their consciousness into any pentagram. Buer is mentioned as having a similar ability. Further research will be required as to the connection between the two.
