LXIX - CAMIO

69 - Camio - Caim, Caym - Appears in The Discoverie of Witchcraft, Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, The Lesser Key of Solomon, and Dictionnaire Infernal

FROM THE LESSER KEY

CAMIO or CAIM. – The Fifty-third Spirit is Camio, or Caim. He is a Great President, and appeareth in the Form of the Bird called a Thrush at first, but afterwards he putteth on the Shape of a Man carrying in his Hand a Sharp Sword. He seemeth to answer in Burning Ashes, or in Coals of Fire. He is a Good Disputer. His Office is to give unto Men the Understanding of all Birds,Lowing of Bullocks, Barking of Dogs, and other Creatures; and also of the Voice of the Waters. He giveth True Answers of Things to Come. He wasof the Order of Angels, but now ruleth over 30 Legions of Spirits Infernal. His Seal is this, which wear thou, etc.

FROM PSEUDOMONARCHIA

Caim [Caym] is a great president, taking the forme of a thrush [blackbird], but when he putteth on man's shape, he answereth in burning ashes, carrieng in his hand a most sharpe swoord, he maketh the best disputers, he giveth men the understanding of all birds, of the lowing of bullocks, and barking of dogs, and also of the sound and noise of waters, he answereth best of things to come, he was of the order of angels, and ruleth thirtie legions of divels.

FROM THE DICTIONNAIRE INFERNAL

Caym, demon of (the) superior class, great president of Hell ; he usually shows himself in the shape of a blackbird. When he appears "in a human form", he answers from the middle of a burning inferno ; he holds a sharp saber. He is said to be the most skilled sophist of Hell ; and he can, with the cleverness of his points, make the most experienced logician despair.

It's with him that Luther had this famous quarrel, the circumstances of which he preserved for us. Caym gives the ability to understand birds' songs, ox's bellows, dogs' barks and the sound of waves. He knows the future. Sometimes he has shown himself as a man  wearing an egret as a hat and decorated with a peacock's tail. This demon, who used to be an angel, commands now thirty legions in hell.

(1) - most probably the sounds of waves in the sea, related to water, although "ondes" can mean sound waves as well

Appearance: An elegantly dressed humanoid thrush or blackbird.

Subrace: Former Power

Abilities: Divination, Languages, Logic

Legions: 30

Rank: President

Notes:

The sword on his hips is an obvious indicator that Caym is a former power. Many supplementary sources place him under Gaap in some way, but none of them have citations from primary sources so yet again I am forced into speculation.

Interestingly, his powers of speaking to beasts are similar to those of barbatos. As for what these connections might imply about hell, it will require a more holistic view of the demons. At least for now, it implies the role of translator is a needed one in hell. If translation is something that is applicable to demons, it implies some interesting things about how their minds work. A requirement for spoken or comprehended language implies the existence of a language endemic to demonkind. I wonder if The Fall counts as sufficient geographical separation from heaven? Is the infernal tongue a dialect of an earlier angelic one? A separate language? Perhaps a creole of the angelic tongue and human language? The lack of information here frustrates me to no end!
